At 7 pm on Friday, November 15th, Southern Spears is screening Slow Dance, a surf film directed by Dane Reynolds and produced by Marine Layer Productions. There will be free food and refreshments, prizes, raffles, store-wide discounts, and even surfboard specials! All proceeds from the raffles and donations will benefit the Galveston Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.
The grainy, hipster-like film stars Craig Anderson. Relatively new on the surf scene radar, Anderson has quickly become a likeable freesurfer. Highlights include a juxtaposition of lofty airs and vast, long barrels. Familiar faces like Reynolds, Chippa Wilson, Rob Machado, and Occy also grace the screen in cameo roles. As the name implies, it is filmed in extended, slow motion cuts. It does not smack you in the face like most surf films. Instead, it offers a sort of haziness with a complimentary soundtrack, which enhances the mood without overtaking it (think artsy or independent film).
With winter underway, cuddle up with your surf pals, watch a surf movie, help out a great cause, and check out the winter wetsuits while you are at it!
