Southern California surfing sensation Ricochet, the world's only known surfing therapy dog, is on another mission to help others. This Golden Retriever, who has raised nearly $150,000 for human/animal causes and earned such honors as the AKC Award for Canine Excellence and the American Humane Association Hero Dog Award, partnered up with Iams dog food to help feed homeless pets.
For every "like" Ricochet receives on her on Facebook page, www.facebook.com/SurfDogRicochet, up to 100,000, Iams will donate one bowl of Senior Plus dog or cat food to feed orphaned dogs and cats, said Ricochet's owner Judy Fridono. Currently, Ricochet's Facebook fan page has about 63,000 "likes," but Fridono is optimistic that hitting 100,000 by the deadline of March 31 is absolutely possible.
"We don't have a lot of time to get 37,000 new fans, but it can happen," she said.
Iams will send Fridono the vouchers so she and Ricochet can hand them out to rescues and shelters that register at firstname.lastname@example.org. This enables Fridono to ensure that the food will be going to qualified groups. She said she's hoping for many, many organizations to sign up to receive the food.
Ricochet began her life as a service dog trainee, but a mischievous streak (chasing birds is just too much fun) caused a career change. Fridono knew Ric had so much to give others. As she said in an ABC News interview, she wanted Ric to help enhance the life of one person through service-dog work, but now, as a surfing therapy/fundraising wiz, Ric has touched the lives of millions.
