Also known as Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, this very rare breed owes it's origin to famed scientist, Gregor Mendel. Thanks to Mendels published experiments on genetic heredity, many Europeans tried their hand at breeding. Although Mendel may have inspired the craze to test out his new theory, it is still unknown which country the Griffon came from.
Surprisingly, even though this is a rare breed, they still aren't in high demand. Also nicknamed "the supreme gun dog" these pups are tailor made. even though they may not fare as good apartment living or city dogs, when it comes to the country, or hunting, it's hard to compete with them. These dogs were specifically bred for:
- Hunting game birds.
- Hunting waterfowl.
- Retrieving game that had been shot or wounded.
- Tracking
- Pointing to game that may be hidden.
- Flushing birds from their cover.
Some other interesting facts about this breed are:
- Grace Kelly's husband owned one.
- Henry Winkler a.k.a "the fonze" had one.
- To prove how rare these dogs are, in 2007 the AKC registered 39,000 litters of labrador retrievers and only 92 litters of Korthals Griffons.
These dogs are great for someone who loves the outdoors, which is basically everyone in Arizona. Hopefully this article will help to shed some light on this rare breed and make people realize what an attribute they would be for their family!
