Supreme Court strikes down Chicago handgun ban, Daley ready with new ordinance

The United State Supreme Court has struck down Chicago's ban on handguns, sending a solid victory to supporters of the 2nd Amendment, not only here in Chicago, but across the country.

Chicago's ban has been in effect since 1982 when City Council passed an ordinance outlawing handgun possession within city limits.

A group of individuals in Chicago filed suit to repeal the band. See: McDonald et al v. City of Chicago, Illinois, et al

The 5- 4 ruling is not unexpected and Mayor Richard Daley and other council allies said last week announced they are prepared to enact a new city ordinance as early as this Wednesday when council next meets.

Mayor Daley has been one of the country's most vocal supporters of gun bans, at both the local and federal level.

Today's SCOTUS ruling comes after a weekend in which the Chicago Tribune reports there were 30 shootings in Chicago this past weekend, 3 of them fatal. Last weekend, there were more than 50 shootings.

The ruling also follows several recent stories in which victims fought back with guns and killed their attackers.

This is outrageous. As bad as the shootings are in Chicago now, it is going to be a lot worse now that guns will be legal accessories like purses and wallets. This is the worst thing that could happen to Chicago and our country. I hope all you gun rights advocates are the first to get victimized.

    BRAVO,

The 2nd Amendment is one of our fundamental rights, and now our US Supreme Court has articulated that right, to be fully incorporated across this nation, into the States and within local jurisdictions.

    "Runforyourlives", are you stupid?

It's still illegal to carry handguns in the state of Illinois. Do you think the fact that handguns were banned affected any of those people already inclined to commit a murder with one?

This ruling lets the law abiding citizens defend themselves with the most effective means possible.

Yes, Runforyourlives, the apocalypse is upon us! People will be blowing each other away just for the fun of it in the well-to-do streets of Chicago; just because they CAN. Quick! Let's all move to Canada!

Runforyourlives, you clearly are posting out of ignorance rather than statistics and facts. The type of gun violence in question is never curbed or eliminated by the type of ordinance put in place in places like Chicago or Washington DC. The numbers simply do not lie. You should do some research and stop spreading falshoods and "the sky is falling" propaganda.

Runforyourlives, you seem to forget that those type of crimes have gone steadily UP since the ban of 82.

This is how the "progressive" left views gun owners and gun rights proponents:

Wiglaf, you do realize that The Onion is a satirical parody newspaper, right? It is a funny article, but saying that it is how ALL progressive leftists view guns is a hasty generalisation, also probably an Ad Hominem. That's where you draw a general rule from a single or few examples. Those are Logical Fallacies. That means that there is an error in your reasoning.

Another example of a Logical Fallucy would be if I assumed that you didn't know what Logical Fallucies were because you are a republican/conservative. Or if you believe everything Rush Limbaugh says, just because he says it; you are committing a Genetic Fallucy and Circular Reasoning. You get the idea.

Metal Guru, It is a generalization. The satirical article writer is making the same generalization. That's what makes it funny. Many progressives think like Runforyourlives. They're a bunch of chicken littles who think and propose that guns make people into stupid, idiotic, gun owners. All kids will end up maimed, fights will end with bullets flying, and the end of the world will be upon us if guns are allowed to be bought, sold, possessed, carried, used, and manufactured.

Here is a good example of the types of personalities on either side of this issue. If a supporter of the constitution, including the second amendment does not wish to use a firearm, they do not purchase or carry one. On the other side are people like “Runforyourlives” which not only want to take away your rights, but wish you harm if things don’t go their way. It paints a clear picture of the type of person which would discard our founding fathers' vision and attempt to deny your basic human right of self defense.
