Obama health care bill could affect you as a cyclist

The decision by the Supreme court on Obamacare was a bad decision for health care, and a bad decision for every American. This decision sets a bad precedence for decisions in many other areas where you aren't using something or doing what the liberal government wants.

By ruling that the congress can force Americans to pay a fine, or a tax, for something they want you to buy, if you want to buy it or not, opens a Pandora’s box that we may not be able to close.

If you don’t buy health insurance, you don’t pay your fare share for health care as per the government. You can then be assessed a special tax for not spending your money on the health insurance the government tells you to buy. This can easily be used in many other areas to get increased tax money for anything congress feels we need.

Something very closely related to this type of tax, is one that has been talked about over the past 10 years in many states, getting cyclists to buy a license, which is a tax. It has not passed up to now, but now the federal govt can go after cyclists to pay a tax or license fee, for not using enough gas and paying too little gas tax.

Drivers pay gas tax, theoretically to pay for the upkeep of the roads. People who bike to save gas, and people who don’t drive at all are in big trouble.

If you ride a bike, you use the roads but don’t pay any gas tax when you are riding your bike on the roads. The government can now say that if you don’t drive your car enough miles, or you get too good of gas mileage with your car, your not paying your share of gas tax and they can bill you for the amount you pay under the average, and it would hold up now in court because the Supreme court has made the decision that congress has that right.

Poor people who don’t even own cars, and use public transportation could really be hit hard. If you payed no gas tax at all, you could be subjected to a tax that would cover all the gas tax you are required to pay in one big lump sum, so you pay your fair share.

Here in the Twin Cities, we have a very high number of cyclists. Many of us ride to work or just to run errands and don’t drive our cars for every trip. You could be subjected to a special tax because of this. Does that make any sense? Of course not, unless you are Chief justice Roberts. He has given congress the right to do just that.

The very first day of the Supreme court hearings on this case, the Obama administration, the more that 50% of the states who were challenging the law, and the lawyer hired by the Supreme court all argued that Obama care was not a tax. The only way the law could not be found unconstitutional was to make it a tax, and that is what chief justice Roberts did to save the law.

This is so important to the future of our country, and if we are going to have the freedoms that has made America the greatest country in the history of the world. This bill is all about taking control of the largest part of the American economy for government control and not about health care. We have to wake up and stop it now.

We need to vote in a new president, and get rid of the reps in congress as well that want to control us and take away more and more of our precious freedoms. I call on all of you as cyclists and as an American to help take our freedoms back, and bring back the greatness of our country.
