Supreme Court deals death blow to Christian university's Obamacare challenge

The U.S. Supreme Court has dealt a death blow today to a lawsuit launched by a major Christian university challenging the legality of several of the provisions of the new Obamacare law. The Court refused to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling that threw the lawsuit out of court.

Liberty University of Lynchburg, Va. is a Christian institution that has nearly 13,000 on-campus students and over 90,000 students who take their courses online.

The university had sued the federal government over Obamacare's provision that forces employers to offer insurance plans that cover abortions and birth control pills even if such provisions fly in the face of the values of the employers. In doing so the university charged that Obamacare violates the Constitutional provision of freedom of religion.

The suit also challenged the authority of the federal government to force employers to provide health insurance to employees.

But a lower court, the 4th U.S. District of Appeals in Richmond, Va, had rejected the university's claims. Liberty then appealed the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The high court announced today that it would not hear the university's appeal, leaving intact the lower court's ruling that essentially ends the lawsuit -- at least for now.

The court has accepted a case brought by Hobby Lobby that challenges the authority of the federal government to require employers to cover contraception for employees. Thus, at least part of the university's complaint will be addressed by the Supreme Court when it considers the Hobby Lobby lawsuit.
