Supporting our troops
We all know of someone in the military. It may be a family member or a friend. There are many of our men and women serving overseas and fighting for our freedom. With Veterans Day here this is a time to remember the loved ones we have lost and to keep praying for the ones still fighting. However, this isn’t the only time we should be thanking our troops or remembering our lost ones.
There are many things you can do throughout the year to support our troops. The holiday season is the hardest for our troops and their families. There is a group called “The Pease Greeters” that is a volunteer group that greets the troops coming home or leaving overseas. They meet at Pease International airport in Portsmouth, NH. They invite the community to come down and greet the troops and welcome them home or give them a safe send off. On the Pease Greeter’s website they give information on what flights are coming in or heading out to overseas. You can check it out and see other ways to support our troops.
If you can’t get down to Pease to greet the troops, at your local Wal-Mart stores they have bags that are pre-made of items that they ship overseas for troops, they can range from $3.00 to $6.00. You can purchase a bag and bring it to the front where they have a box set up to put them in. You can even write a note to send off with your purchase. This is a great way to get your children involved with the community and to help them understand why you are supporting the troops.
If you would like to have your child draw a picture or write their own letter to our troops, the website About.com gives you step by step information on the size restrictions, or if you’re looking to send packages to any of the troops, this site is gives you guidelines as well and an address to send it to.
Remember the holiday season is a time to be thankful and giving. Let's support the people that are keeping us safe, our troops they deserve it!
