Supporters of dog adoption to protest Cow Palace dog show this weekend

The annual Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog Show is taking place this weekend, January 28th and 29th at the Cow Palace in Daly City.   With over 1200 dogs entered in the competitions, representing 136 breeds, the show bills itself as "...the perfect place to decide on your next breed."  Even San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee will proclaim the weekend as "Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog Show Days in the City."

Also planning to be at the front doors of the Cow Palace are dozens of protesters whose message to ticket holders is the following: 3 - 4 million animals are killed in shelters because of breeding and overpopulation.  The protesters say that pure bred dogs are available in animal shelters and through rescue groups, and that by adopting through these agencies, people can save lives.

Another concern the protesters have is that the kennel club show emphasizes looks of the breed over the joys and love a companion animal can provide.  They contend that if breeders truly loved their dogs they would not "contribute to the death and suffering of dogs in shelters of that same breed" by continuing to produce more puppies in an already overcrowded environment.

The Golden Gate Kennel Club says that it "ranks as one of the most prestigious shows in the nation, having received the 100 Year-Plus award from the American Kennel Club. It is the oldest major event in Northern California and has long been acknowledged as "the Bay Area family show" for dog lovers of all ages.

Shani Campbell of United for Animals welcomes anyone who believes in their message to join them in their efforts to educate the public about pet overpopulation.
