News from the liberterrain…
Joey G. Dauben's supporters claim that the child assault accusations against him are reprisals for child porn and child abuse stories he has investigated over the past four years.
One supporter contacted by the Dallas Libertarian Examiner yesterday insisted, "I truly believe this is an attempt to shut him down" but requested anonymity because "I am getting threatened" and "they are out for blood now."
Dauben, publisher of small town newspapers in Ellis County and a crusader against child pornography and child molestation was himself arrested on accusations of sexually assaulting a child.
The week before Christmas, according to the Athens Daily Review, Dauben was charged with a 2007 assault on a fifteen-year-old boy at a church camp.
At this writing Dauben has not responded to inquiries from the Dallas Libertarian Examiner, but he denied the accusations on December 16 in his flagship Ellis County Observer (PDF).
In that issue he wrote, "I know what it's like to be accused falsely, which is why I'm so focused on exposing false accusers and these child molesters running family courts, CPS and the bastards that I write stories about."
Using his Freedom of the Press Group newspapers, the thirty-year-old Dauben is an iconoclastic muckraker who pulls no punches when going after those in city and county government he believes to be corrupt. As a result he has made some powerful enemies over the years.
In 2009 Dauben was charged with three felonies for publishing the mug shot of a reserve police officer. Last summer his home and office were raided by authorities for publishing a minor's medical records.
In both cases all charges were dropped.
Dauben, profiled and interviewed by the Dallas Libertarian Examiner last January, has recruited candidates for the Libertarian Party of Texas in past elections and plans to do the same in 2012.
Eugene J. Flynn, a member of the Dallas County Libertarian Party Executive Committee, cautioned, "I don't know if he is guilty or not, but I think we should try to get the facts correct."
The Party's concern is that Dauben has filed for the State Senator nomination from the 23rd Senatorial District as a Libertarian Party candidate.
"I do hope there is some resolution before the LP's March 24, 2012 3rd Senatorial District Convention," Flynn told the Dallas Libertarian Examiner. "At the present time he is the only individual seeking that nomination."
