If you’re a fan of this column, you know we celebrate all sorts of traditional, non-traditional and downright wacky holidays and July 9 is no exception. Not only is it National Sugar Cookie Day, but today also celebrates a widely worn undergarment. It’s National No Bra Day! No foolin’! The annual event was launched by Anastasia M. Doughnuts.

Whether you call them bras, camisoles, lingerie or "armor for the arms," today's brassieres are defined as "a woman's undergarment for supporting the breasts," according to Dictionary.com.

Brief History of Bras

Corsets have been worn for centuries. Corsets were tight-fitting clothing used to shape a woman’s or man’s torso. Teeny tiny waists were popular back in the day. Some were made of thin pieces of whalebone placed between two layers of corset material.

New York socialite, Mary Phelps Jacob, received the first U.S. patent for the first modern brassiere in 1913. Instead of wearing constricting and downright painful corsets, Jacob wanted to wear something a bit more comfortable. With a little help from her maid, Jacob's patented bra was lightweight and soft. She later sold her Caresses Crosby business to the Warner Brothers Corset Company for $1,500, which went on to earn approximately $15 million from the patent.

So go ahead ladies - it’s time to let loose a little. Today is the perfect day to set the “girls” free and take part in the National No Bra Day celebration! And be sure to enjoy a sweet treat to eat while you are at it!
