There is no right to be a private contractor who does business with a government, be it national, state or local, correct? Other then a right not to being discriminated against based on certain criteria such as race, religion, sexual orientation, there is no right to such a contract.
I bring this up because Milwaukee County Supervisor David Bowen is the sponsor of a bill that would mandate a "living wage" for contractors to pay workers, when the contractors do business with the county. Excellent
It would set the wage at a minimum of $12.45 an hour. Now, if a business does not want to work with the government, they don't have to do so. It's their option. After all these companies will make a profit with the higher wages they pay. Might they make less? Yes, and if they don't want the smaller profit, there are other companies that will.
We need to raise the federal minimum wage, but that won't happen along as Republicans block it in Congress. But a higher wage for contractor employees is a good start, though it is still only a fraction of a minimum wage based on increases in productivity and inflation since 1960.
County Executive Chris Abele has opposed this living wage. Please contact him at 414 278-4211 and urge him to support it. Or, e-mail him at firstname.lastname@example.org
Finally contact your county supervisor at the Milwaukee County homepage. Thanks
