Whether by choice or circumstance, women are increasingly having children later in life than their predecessors. Their grandmothers and great-grandmothers became mothers at the same ages that women today are still in the process of figuring out who they are and what they want to do with their lives. More and more women complete graduate and postgraduate degrees, forge ahead into the workplace and onto a pressure-filled career path, and explore other sides of their personality before taking on the responsibility of being a mom. On the other hand, there are many women who want to get pregnant earlier in their lives but spend years trying everything medically and spiritually possible to have a baby and get heartbreaking monthly reminders of what isn’t yet happening for them.
Doctors consider pregnancy over the age of 35 “high-risk” and with childbirth being one of the most difficult things a woman goes through, the added physical and mental stresses have “older” mothers looking for information, support, and an outlet. Motherhood Later…Than Sooner fills that niche, as well as providing traditional playgroups and activities. There are groups all over the United States, Canada, and even across the globe, and that includes one for Long Islanders based right here in Great Neck.
Like other moms and dads across Long Island, those who become parents later in life want a group of allies against the hurdles and frustrations of childrearing today. Motherhood Later…Than Sooner offers a community for first-time moms ages 35 and up and women who have become mothers again at 35 or older. The website includes a discussion forum where real parents ask for help on anything and everything related to parenthood. A newsletter and a meet-up site are available to give moms all of the resources, events, and friendships they need.
There is also a tab called “blog” that reveals the cool and interesting innermost thoughts of some truly entertaining and enlightening women. Even if you’re not of an age to be eligible to join this group, take a look at the website and you’ll be delighted by what you find. No matter what their age, mothers share some very common, complicated, courageous, and charming experiences and the blog page at Motherhood Later…Than Sooner has all of the above and more.
