As a matter of corporate and individual freedom, it makes sense for all Americans, political affiliation aside, to join the movement to back conservative radio/TV talk show host Glenn Beck. In a previous column exception was taken to Beck's association with Texas mega-church preacher John Hagee and the reckless, wildly speculative, end of the world views he advocated during a televised discussion with Mr. Beck. In spite of this one issue, Glenn was thus described: "a true champion of conservative principle, none surpass Glenn Beck’s unflinching promotion of traditional American values". It's important to recognize that one can have minor disagreements with another and not discount them as a whole. Beck's voice mustn’t be muted by left wing extremists who even now seek to silence him utterly.
A recent push by the "hard left" seeks to facilitate Beck's departure from radio and TV by threatening to boycott sponsors of his programs. The colossal irony is that groups like "Move On", "Daily Kos", and "Color of Change" only have the liberty to spew their venom because men like Beck had the fortitude to stand up against tyranny in the first place. Every accusation these "hate groups" hurl at conservatives can easily be levied against them in return and then some. There's a squalid underbelly to these movements whose overall purpose appears to be undermining American freedoms, which the majority of our country would preserve, in order to establish a socialistic, politically correct, matrix in its stead.
We shall examine these groups at greater length, but for now let’s focus on a singular effect extremists efforts are having on patriotic Americans. Bids of late by an over-the-top group called "Color of Change" to instigate a boycott of Beck’s sponsors, have sparked an upsurge of reciprocation in defense of Beck and our liberties in general. One such movement simply called "American Supporting Glenn Beck" has surfaced on the preeminent social website "Facebook" and is being spearheaded by Pittsburgh, PA. resident, Danielle Barnett Ohliger, (left with daughter) who describes herself as "a stay-at-home mom who is very worried about our nation". It is striking that one who might fairly be described as an "average American" would be so moved by circumstances to begin such an endeavor. Mrs. Ohliger was gracious enough to share some of her views. The following is a portion of that interview:
Examiner: You recently initiated an internet effort to foster support for Mr. Glenn Beck, conservative radio talk show host and Fox News moderator of the 5:00 P.M. weekday program bearing his name?Mrs. Ohliger: Yes, I started Americans Supporting Glenn Beck (Facebook campaign)
Examiner: When did you begin this endeavor?
Mrs. Ohliger: On August 14th
Examiner: Would you explain the specifics of how this works? In other words, is this strictly advertised and administered through the World Wide Web at this point?
Mrs. Ohliger: We are strictly a word-of-mouth group that is using only the worldwide web!
Examiner: Please explain the impetus for taking this action. For instance was there a particular event or general circumstance that lead you to embark on this project.
Mrs. Ohliger: I started this group because of the call from "Color of Change" to boycott the sponsors/advertisers of Mr. Beck's radio and television shows to try to get him off the air. I am tired of the big, aggressive and radical groups always getting their way and the quiet, hardworking Americans frustrated and not being heard. We have learned the most important thing now is to be knowledgeable and cohesive!
We shall look at the remainder of the interview with Danielle Ohliger in the next column. For now, to give the topic proper perspective, it’s important to understand the nature of the issues "Color of Change" has with Beck. Also, later on we shall see who the folks are setting the tempo within that organization. "Color of Change" on its website asserts the following as justification for the protest: Fox's Glenn Beck recently said "This president has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people ... this guy is, I believe, a racist." Beck is on a campaign to convince the American public that President Obama's agenda is about serving the needs of Black communities at White people's expense. It's repulsive, divisive and shouldn't be on the air.
Usually the use of the ellipsis, the three little dots... that indicate the omission of something not necessarily relevant or of great significance, is of little consequence when the words being replaced don’t impact what comes immediately before or after. In this case however, as everyone will clearly understand from viewing the attached video, Mr. Beck quickly added, ..."or the white culture, I don’t know what it is". Beck leaves the matter open-ended and strongly suggests that he is not completely certain what Obama’s "deal" might be. He then follows that up with sound reasoning about why he would have used such hyperbole in the first place; "you can’t sit in a pew with Jeremiah Wright for 20 years and not hear ‘some of that stuff’ and not have it wash over. What kind of President of the United States immediately jumps on the police, just like what kind of president would ever say, oh well yeah, well he’s black, of course he was breaking into the house". The latter of these comments pertain to the pseudo-racially charged Cambridge, Massachusetts incident involving the arrest of a black Harvard scholar by a white police officer, over which Obama concluded, the police acted stupidly, before all the facts of the incident were known. This occurrence was precursory to the notorious "Beer Summit" where Obama invited the litigants to the White House to sit down, have a couple "brews", and talk things over, which ultimately resolved nothing. Quite simply, everything Beck iterates about the matter is fair. The odious reaction of the ultra-liberal left wingers is not.

Furthermore, "Color of Change" omits the words "I think" from Beck’s commentary between "president" and "has" with no ellipsis, hence making the statement appear more dogmatic, hateful, and leaving no room for doubt that his meaning substantiates their views. The discourse being framed parenthetically with "I think" and "I don’t know what it is" leaves much room for doubt about "COC’s" allegations of "race baiting" and/or "racism". Beck correctly points out that Obama attended a "Black Liberation Theology" church for 20 years. IF the body of beliefs promulgated by that "church" don’t constitute "repulsive, divisive, racism", nothing ever will. It looks as if, in this day and age, the only type of acceptable racial prejudice is that which derides, white, Christian men. Don’t these acrimonious factions realize that ideas have consequences?

BEING A CONSERVATIVE AND A HUGE FAN OF YOURS , I WILL MAKE SURE I NEVER BUY FROM THOSE ADVERTISERS AGAIN~~~
THNAKS FOR BEING A GREAT AMERICAN ~
Being an independent and dislking what you stand for, I will buy doubly from all of those advertisers.
Thanks for rearing the ugly head of racism in the conservative party.
I like how you include a bunch of completely irrelevant links. Nice bit of race baiting, congrats. Beck is getting what he deserves and people are within their rights to ask advertisers not to support his show just as they have the right to do so or not. You and the rest of the butthurt looneys who think he is a prophet can support him all you want. Just don't expect decent people to buy into his racism or yours. And if this boycott is really falling apart, why all the hand wringing?
STUD2: Why just double it? Go to walmart and lay it all down bro. By doing this, you will help all those hungry chinese workers. Stop being such a racist by holding back their well being. What did all those innocent chinese toddlers ever do to you? Stop thinking about yourself all the time. Geeez!!
JJ
The fact is that in general the conservative right populace has more money and will just transfer that buying power to those that don't play the boycott game. You can whine and whimper all you want but facts is facts man. I am an engineer, making a fine good wage by the way, because I chose to get an education and better myself. I know that makes all you jealuos libs take a big ole breath and jump up to protest, but there aint nothin you can do about it now is there? What are you up to besides whining like the lefty baby that you are? I can wager statistics on my side, what you got?
Hey Uberstud, I believe since you are an engineer making a good living that you should go ahead and share the wealth a little bit. I believe that it is good policy to take money from hardworking American's who have put in the effort to better themselves and give it to those who sit on their duffs and drink Colt 45's all day. That is a great way to stimulate our economy. And that folks, is change you can believe in.
I have wrote to all the companies who are pulling their ads from the Glenn Beck Program and let them know that I will no longer purchase products from any of them. I already called Progressive and switched my car insurance. These boycotts can work both ways, and I will not sit back and allow a voice of reason to be silenced by a group that was co-founded by a communist criminal like Van Jones.
Keith,
I think its great that you are defending Glenn Beck like this and I hope it helps you through some of the emotional challenges you have been experiencing regarding the issues we discussed in prior threads . As I see it, you two have very similar views of how the End Times play out. I do take exception to Glenn's theory of the fifth horseman of the apocalypse and his thoughts on the Mormon church and their attempt to use FEMA camps for emergency tabernacles. Other than that, I think he represents conservative values as well as any other God fearing Christian like Sarah Palin, Jimmy Swaggart or Jim and Tammy Baker. As always, I look forward to your thoughts.
Barack Obama & The "Studs",
Y'all are a riot!! Thanks for reading and sharing your views. It's awesome that we can keep our sense of humor in light of something as decidedly unfunny as this Glenn Beck situation. Keep reading, keeping commenting, keep those rapier-like wits honed to a razor's edge!

Kerry,
Interesting thoughts. A vital part of our freedom is to exercise our right to freely express in accordance with the dictates of our conscience. As those who hold traditional values sometimes this means we have to be prepared to receive criticism from those who disagree with us, even though their worldview might be skewed. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. Part 2 of this feature will be published by sometime tomorrow. I hope you enjoy it as well.

I hope part two will address Glenn's personal experiences with our healthcare system and how his love/hate affair with it have shaped his views on today's reform efforts.
Bible Study,
You seem utterly incapable of masking sarcasm. It's not very becoming, as I see it. I don't plan on examining healthcare at this time but it's not necessarily out of the question either. As for your comment, "...the emotional challenges you have been experiencing regarding the issues we discussed in prior threads", I say "exactly what 'issues' have we discussed"? What you do is cast the occasional veiled accusation my way in order to undermine my credibility, for your own selfish reasons. I assume it gives you some sort of sick pleasure. Truth is, we've discussed no issues at all.
I think you are very cowardly. If you weren't, you would get to the verb. I wish you the best and hope you're well, but you need to get over whatever YOUR emotional issues/challenges are! Seriously...

Then there's those of us who would love to see everyone from both the left and the right shut up and go home. I know facts are boring and are not self-promoting, but wouldn't it be nice if everyone from Beck to Olbermann went Bye-bye.
Media in this country has tuned into a third-world arcade at the world's least-hip mall.
Keith, My point exactly, we haven't really been able to discuss your emotional challenges in a healthy constructive way and for that I am truly sorry.
On a related subject, Glenn Beck has been accused of trying to label the president a racist fascist when really all he's doing is exploring the history of Nazism and Eugenics and nothing has been said to tie the president directly to these historical events. Its enough to suggest the point. This is not unlike Sean Hannity's nearly successful "Stop Obama Express" plan to keep Obama out of office by introducing the idea that he and William Ayers were on the same bowling team for 7 years. Despite the fact that the two approaches are equal in value in regard to your dispensational views on the matter, I hardly think you can conflate the two.
George,
I don't completely agree with you, but I still believe your viewpoint is a valuable one. Love the idiom to describe the media: "third-world arcade at the world's least-hip mall". PRICELESS!
Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.

"IF the body of beliefs promulgated by that 'church' dont constitute 'repulsive, divisive, racism', nothing ever will."
What is it about the beliefs of Trinity UCC that you feel is repulsive, divisive and racist?
William:
Read over the church's statement of belief. Substitute "white" everytime you see the word "black"? Would you call it racist then? Why the need to stipulate black and white anyway? Aren't we all Americans and God's children? I say "divisive". And if one can listen to the garbage spewed by leadership and guest preachers at Trinty (and similar Black Liberation Theology "churches") like Obama did for all those years and not have the word "repulsive" come to mind... Wow.
I appreciate you reading and commenting but, I cannot agree with you sir, nor will I concede my point.
The entire civilized world has seen what goes on at Trinity, the onus is upon their apologists to defend them, not vice-versa...

"Why the need to stipulate black and white anyway? Aren't we all Americans and God's children?"
In order to overcome or combat the cultural stereotypes that things black or African are inherently inferior to things white or European.
Go read Rev. Wright's speech to the NPC.
"Reconciliation means we embrace our individual rich histories, all of them. We retain who we are as persons of different cultures, while acknowledging that those of other cultures are not superior or inferior to us. They are just different from us.
We root out any teaching of superiority, inferiority, hatred, or prejudice.
And we recognize for the first time in modern history in the West that the other who stands before us with a different color of skin, a different texture of hair, different music, different preaching styles, and different dance moves, that other is one of God's children just as we are, no better, no worse, prone to error and in need of forgiveness, just as we are."
"The entire civilized world has seen what goes on at Trinity, the onus is upon their apologists to defend them, not vice-versa..."
Most of the world never bothered to truly investigate what was going on at Trinity. Most of the coverage was just concerned with how Obama would react to the coverage. Very few bothered to determine if the coverage accurately portrayed the reality of what Trinity was all about.
As an example of the attitudes Trinity is trying to combat, I suggest you Google Kiri Davis' short documentary "A girl like me".
Guess who loves it when we argue like this? That's right you guessed it, the guy with the pointy tail and pitchfork.

You mean my high school gym teacher hates it when we argue like this? Man! I thought he was dead...

William,
Trinity MUST, out of necessity, defend itself because of the repulsive, divisive, racist comments by Jeremiah Wright. Take his antics at face value, couple them with doctrinal philosophy, and add his unrepentant attitude how could one with any reason or dispassion, come to a conclusion other than what I've suggested here? His comments aren't being taken out of context. Wright's well documented diatribes are very unequivocal. But as I propose in the body of this article, Trinity has the freedom to hate America, white America, because of, not in spite of, the intestinal fortitude of guys like Glenn Beck. I strongly dissent from your opinions and find your arguments quite disingenuous in light of the facts. Yes, I will choose to believe my lying eyes and ears when it comes to the content Trinity has publicized. Still I believe y'all have every right to be as hateful as you want, until or unless it can be shown to specifically incite violence.
Keith A. Wimer
Examiner.com
If Trinity UCC and Rev. Wright hated white people so much, as you assert, why would they voluntarily remain part of the United Church of Christ which is a predominately white denomination? Not only do they remain members, but they are voluntarily one of the UCCs largest financial supporters.
How does the experience of William A. Von Hoene Jr. fit into your view of Rev. Wright? His full letter can be googled. Rev. Wright saved his inter-racial marriage when Hoene's future wife an African-American was going to call off their wedding because of race. Rev. Wright according to Hoene told her "Racial divisions were unacceptable no matter how great or prolonged the pain that caused them. God would not want us to assess or make decisions about people based on race. The world could make progress on issues of race only if people were prepared to break down barriers that were much easier to let stand."
As for the "Anti-American" part. The assertion holds about as much water as the current charges against health care protesters being "un-American'. To oppose government polices that you feel are harming people is not anti-American is called being a Christian.
William,
Perhaps you could enlighten us with the context of Wright's infamous rant, "...God damn America..." and/or Black Liberation Theology in general? I think it would help me and presumably others get past our ill-conceived notions.
So THAT'S what being a "Christian" means, opposing government polices that you feel are harming people? Here I was going on the ludricrous presumption that it meant embracing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the propitiation of our sin, the Son of God, the Alpha and Omega, God in flesh... I'm fixing to send my old Sunday School teachers strongly worded letters!

In the NPR article you linked I thought Dr. Cone gave a good summary of Black Liberation Theology.
Quoting from the article:
"Cone explains that at the core of black liberation theology is an effort in a white-dominated society, in which black has been defined as evil to make the gospel relevant to the life and struggles of American blacks, and to help black people learn to love themselves. It's an attempt, he says "to teach people how to be both unapologetically black and Christian at the same time."
I think it is unbelievable that we are still talking about black/white issues. Do you know that my children did NOT distinguish people by black or white UNTIL they started school, up till then every one was just different shades of tan or brown. When is EVERYONE going to understand that NOT ALL people that came over on the Mayflower were slave owners or even believed in slaves?? Did anyone ask themselves why the "Native Americans" are living on reservations instead of living anywhere on the land of this continent since they were here before the Mayflower landed on Plymouth Rock.
IMO, opposing or counteracting government polices that are worsening the human condition is something Christians have been called to do. I assume you have been taught the following.
Matthew 25:35-40 (New International Version)
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
I love this Blog. No one cuts and pastes like Keith. It all sounds so learned. I may have to break out the wine and cheese!
Danielle,
Are you aware that many of the "Native Americans" who attempted to assimilate into the Pilgrim/Puritan society where eventually rounded up and sold into Slavery in Bermuda?
Somehow the societal message that white is superior to black continues to seep through even to kids at young ages. Again I would suggest Kiri Davis' documentary "A girl like me".
The following is an event told by Tim Wise.
While watching "Evan Almighty" with his wife and two young daughters, he was faced with a grave reality. Morgan Freeman, who plays God in the movie, as he does in multiple films, came on screen. His 4-year-old daughter asked if that was God. Immediately his 6-year-old daughter responded, "That can't be God." He said that he knew exactly why she said that and knew he had to ask anyway. When he questioned her, she said, "Because God isn't black."
Since when is God talking to government??? God is talking to his children (people) NOT a government. Maybe you should all start reading the King James Version of the Bible and NOT the "New International Version" which is like Wikipedia-- oh yeah and maybe some praying would help too! Just my opinion.
Perhaps you could enlighten us with the context of Wright's infamous rant, "...God damn America..."
I will refer to the NPR article you linked.
"According to Hopkins, that was theological wordplay because the word 'damn' is straight out of the Bible and has a specific meaning in the original Hebrew.
'It means a sacred condemnation by God to a wayward nation who has strayed from issues of justice, strayed from issues of peace, strayed from issues of reconciliation,' Hopkins says."
--End of quote from article--
As Hopkins attempts to explain, Rev. Wright wasn't actually calling for God to destroy America, only that God would not bless some of the actions of America.
The overall message in the sermon was that you should keep your faith and trust in God and not in human governments. In the sermon Rev. Wright talked about the failures of all human governments, not just the US government.
FWIW, In the sermon, Rev. Wright also asked for forgiveness for his use of the
If you prefer the King James Version then fine, I don't think it changes the meaning. Yes, God is talking to people and Jesus is saying you will be judged on what you have done for the least of these.
Matthew 25:35-40 (King James Version)
35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

Please excuse the double posts, I'm not sure why it does that sometimes when I refresh the screen.
Not everyone in America comes with the same cultural background. Sometimes those cultural differences happen to align along skin color although not caused by the color of the skin.
As an example I would point to Capitol Hill United Methodist Church and Ebenezer Methodist Church which apparently sit almost back to back in Washington DC. One was started when members of the other kicked the African-Americans out of the church in the early 1800's. Now 200 hundred years later they have begun attempts at reconciliation of the congregations. But one of the problems they have run into is that they have developed different worship styles and different expectations of what the worship service will be like. Although I would encourage them to be reconciled one to another, I think it would be a shame if that meant the loss of a particular worship style.
As a member of the UCC, but not Trinity I've grown to appreciate the differences in worship styles between my congregation and Trinity's. I frequently watch the Trinity service over the internet before attending by local church. Which is why I'm familiar with Trinity.
I know a member a former member Trinity who after moving to CA who now attends a UCC congregation that celebrates Japanese heritage, culture and honors their shared experience in the US. She was welcomed with open arms and claims that she can relate closely to a congregation that celebrates their heritage even when it is not her own African heritage.
Danielle,
Your comment about King James verses NIV was a riot! Loved it. I think your points are very worthwhile and I hope the essence of all shall be given thoughtful consideration here even as I give them.
William my friend,
If you are truly my brother in Christ I embrace you as such. However, I cannot abide the way you gloss over the direct claims of racism levied against Rev. Wright and still haven't begun to explain how his commentary is out of context or not representative of Black Liberation Theology as I've suggested. I don't dispute that activism is a vital part of the Christian experience, it is. But I gave you a biblical definition of "Christianity, while your extolling the perceived implications. That's all I have to offer on the matter and while you may take your liberty offering anything else you like here, you and I are at an impass and simply must agree to disagree. Are you asserting that being a Black Liberation Theologian in and of itself is racist? As it is practiced at Trinity it is most definitely not racist. BTW, Dr. Cone claims that Trinity best exemplifies his theology in practice.
Dr. Cone from the article you linked stated "that at the core of black liberation theology is an effort in a white-dominated society, in which black has been defined as evil to make the gospel relevant to the life and struggles of American blacks, and to help black people learn to love themselves. I am very unhappy that advertisers are withdrawing their adds from Glenn Beck's program. To me, Beck is a patriot. I don't agree with everything he says, but I'm appalled by the Color of Change's action. Repugnant in every way. When did we become so "politically correct" that we can't tolerate others views?
