Support for same-sex marriages from certain republicans (Video)

Times are changing and American views are changing as well. Once Americans thought it would never happen. However, according to NBC News published yesterday, “Supporters of same-sex marriage hope for a boost this week when dozens of high-profile Republicans, many no longer in office, submit their legal argument to the Supreme Court on why gays and lesbians should be allowed to wed... More than 80 Republicans are signatories to the "friend of the Court" brief to be filed in the case over Proposition 8, a California law banning same-sex marriage… The New York Times first reported on the brief.”

NBC News goes on to say, “Six former governors, including Jon Huntsman of Utah and Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey, and members of President George W. Bush’s cabinet, such as former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, and four former and two current members of Congress signed the brief. Members of the Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain presidential campaigns also signed.” The brief will be filed Thursday and additional signatures will still be added.

Public opinion remains divided on the issue of same-sex marriage. However, according to an article published in the New York Times back in December, “In a Pew poll conducted in October, 49 percent of respondents said they favored allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally and 40 percent were opposed. Four years earlier, in August 2008, the numbers were just about reversed: 39 percent in favor and 52 percent opposed.”

The New York Times goes on to say, “A strong majority of younger Americans now support same-sex marriage. In a Gallup Poll conducted last month, 73 percent of people between 18 and 29 years old said they favored it, while only 39 percent of people older than 65 did.” African Americans and Latino support is also on the rise.

The legal matter and gay rights is very controversial. The controversy gets to the root of mental health; leaving some people in mental anguish and others angry or hopeful that things will change in America.
