'Supernatural' spotlight: spotlight on Kevin Tran (Photos)

"Supernatural" has had prophets before. Prophet Chuck Shurley (introduced in S4E18 "The Monster at the End of This Book" and played by Rob Benedict) was a writer who mistook the prophecies he was receiving as especially vivid dreams that he could use as plots in his books. He produced the "Supernatural" book series, what Castiel described as "The Winchester Gospel,"under the pen name Carver Edlund (a sly nod to series writer/director Ben Edlund and writer Jeremy Carver.) Once he found he was a prophet Chuck took up the mantle of responsibility and gave Sam and Dean critical information about their part in the upcoming apocalypse. Unfortunately we haven't seen Chuck since S5E22 "Swan Song."

It appears something has happened to Chuck, although we don't know what that might be. (Many theories have been bandied about by fans - the most popular one being that Chuck was actually God.) As Chuck has gone MIA, another Prophet was activated. In this case it's Kevin Tran (played by Osric Chau.)

Kevin is a high-achieving Advanced Placement student. He was studying for his college entrance exams on the night he was activated. After initially freaking out after learning that there were such things as monsters and demons, he has since begun to take things in stride and assimilate a sense of order in his life - something Kevin, a rigidly structured student, desperately craved.

What do we know about Kevin?

  • He was activated on the night Dean took the tablet entitled "Leviathan" from Dick Roman.
  • Kevin can read the glyphs on the tablet, information passed down from God and written by the archangel Metatron.
  • His former girlfriend, Channing, was abducted and killed by Crowley in an attempt by Crowley to force Kevin to provide information written on a newly found tablet entitled "Demons."
  • He does not have a high threshold for pain. (As evidenced when Sam and Dean required that both Kevin and his mother, Mrs. Tran, get a tattoo that would help shield them from the demon's radar.)

What do you think about Kevin? Do you like his character? Do you think he and his mother make a good team? Please comment below and let me know what you think.
