'Supernatural' spotlight: Spotlight on Garth

See also

As far as Hunters in the "Supernatural" universe go, Garth Fitzgerald IV (played by DJ Qualls) is hardly what you'd expect the traditional Hunter to be. Originally intending to be a Dentist, Garth was pulled into the world of Hunting when he was forced to kill the Tooth Fairy. After that, there was no going back.

Garth was introduced to the series in S6E4 "Weekend at Bobby's." Though he was not seen onscreen, Bobby (Jim Beaver) delivered the perfect set up to make Garth's entrance into the "Supernatural" universe memorable:

Bobby: Yeah, Garth, what do you got? ... Never heard of a vamp doin' that. It doesn't sound like our kind of thing. Better drop a dime to the FBI.
(Bobby hangs up the phone. Another phone labeled FBI Tom Willis rings.)
Bobby: Willis, FBI. ... No, Garth, not me the FBI. The real FBI! How are you still alive?

Garth first appeared on-screen in S7E8 "Season Seven, Time for a Wedding!" With Bobby busy working another case and Sam (Jared Padalecki) under the influence of a love spell, Dean (Jensen Ackles) was forced to work with Garth to solve the latest case he had uncovered. After a successful completion of the investigation along with restoring Sam to his regular self, Garth gave Dean a healthy hug and headed out in his Ford Ranchero.

Garth appeared twice more onscreen in S7E18 "Party on, Garth" and S8E6 "Southern Comfort" where it was revealed that Garth had decided to step up and attempt to fill the void left after Bobby died. Though he was mentioned a handful of times in the remainder of the eighth season, Garth has yet to pop back up on the series. Hopefully that will be rectified in the series' ninth season.

Fun facts about Garth:

  • "Supernatural" writer Daniel Loflin credits former show runner Sera Gamble for introducing Garth to the series. In addition, DJ Qualls was Loflin’s first choice for the part as Loflin had been a fan of Qualls since the movie Road Trip.
  • Fellow "Supernatural" writer Andrew Dabb decided that Garth needed to be a hugger.
  • Writer Adam Glass created Mr. Fizzles, the sock puppet Garth used to get Tess to give details on the Shojo in S7E18 "Party on Garth."
  • Writer Robbie Thompson came up with the “You got Garthed” catch phrase.

It's unclear when Garth will return to the series, but with the Winchesters in peril, you can bet it will be soon.
