Another tragic shooting happened Wednesday night at a supermarket in northern Indiana. A gunman started firing several rounds at random people at Martin’s Supermarket in Elkhart, Ind. As reported by The Elkhart Truth on Jan. 16, three people have been killed, including the unidentified shooter.

Authorities say that a 22-year-old white male entered the store late that night around 10 p.m. and started openly firing at people. He shot and killed a young female employee and then walked to the other end of the grocery store and killed another female, a shopper who appeared to be in her 40’s. The identities of the victims are not being released just yet.

When police arrived to the terrifying scene, the shooter was allegedly aiming his gun at the head of someone else that may have been another employee. The Elkhart police officers shot and killed the gunman, saving the other person’s life. Shots were said to be exchanged between police and the shooter before he was stopped from hurting anyone else.

"It's a huge crime scene," said Sgt. Trent Smith of the Indiana State Police. "The areas where the shootings happened in the store are basically from one end of the store to the next. There were several rounds fired in there."

The gunman was said to have used a semi-automatic handgun and also carried a large knife on him at the time. Police are going through surveillance videos that the store had set up in hopes that they can pinpoint exactly what happened. They will also be getting search warrants to help them find a motive as to why this young man did this horrific act.

Martin's supermarket has locations in both Indiana and Michigan. They are, of course, saddened by this event releasing this statement saying "Thank you to our community for your thoughts and prayers tonight. We will comment further when we can do so responsibly and appropriately."
