Since 1999, Super Smash Bros. has had an incredible impact on the Nintendo gaming community and the franchise has been a hit with each release for its unique crossovers of the company’s games. Later this year, Nintendo will be releasing the much anticipated Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and for the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo has been teasing the Super Smash Bros. fans with beautiful promotional trailers and announcement videos. In the Nintendo Direct live video announcement, director Mashiro Sakurai discussed and recapped the numerous announcements for the changes in the upcoming Smash games. Summer of 2014, Super Smash Bros. will be available for the 3DS console and the Wii U version will be released in the winter.

Custom Move Sets
One of the most prominent newer additions to Smash is the ability to make custom move sets. This feature will enable players for both consoles to have special move variations to the respective characters. During the Nintendo Direct held April 8, director Mashiro Sakurai explained how the custom move sets will be only available for playing locally or with friends online. Only this much information has been released as of yet and more will be announced.

Fighters Roster
The Super Smash Bros. character roster has had significant changes to not only the character selection but also to the individual characters. There are 29 announced characters and six entirely new brawlers. Characters Rosalina & Luma from Super Mario Galaxy, Greninja from Pokemon X & Y, Villager from Animal Crossing, Little Mac from Punch-Out!, Wii Fit Trainer from Wii Fit, and Mega Man have joined the fight and replaced many of Super Smash Bros. Brawl fighters. Many of the fighters will have new additional moves. For example, Lucario from the Pokemon franchise will be able to evolve into its Mega Evolution. Additionally, certain stages will boss characters such as Ridley from Metroid series and the Yellow Devil from Mega Man 2.

Zelda and Samus Changes
Princess Zelda and Samus have had considerable changes done to them. Both of them have been separated into different playable characters. Zelda will no longer transform back and forth between Sheik, because Sheik has become a separate playable character altogether. Zelda’s new down B attack is called “Phantom Slash” which summons the Phantom from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Whereas for Samus, after she uses her hyper beam final smash in game, it won’t cause her to lose her power suit and become Zero Suit Samus. Because, like Zelda, Zero Suit Samus will be all new independent character. Zero Suit Samus will be given hyper boots to give her more mobility and power.

New 'Global Ranking Power System' and Modes
It has been confirmed that online multiplayer will be featured on both the Wii U and the 3DS through Nintendo Network IDs with two different options for the battles. The "For Fun" mode will have random stages, open access to items, smash battles only, and will only count by wins. Whereas, "For Glory" will be intended for those who are more competitive players and will have no items, one on one matches, and Final Destination versions of stages. There is going to be a new ranking system that will be implemented in the Super Smash Bros. for both consoles which will determine the strength and the skills of the players. “The Global Ranking Power” system will rank the participants in terms of the number of players internationally that they are “better than” and match them up with other competitors of their skill level.

3DS Exclusives
Exclusively for the 3DS, “Smash Run” mode will have fast pace five minute rounds where up to 4 players will scour expansive dungeon-like stages side by side in search for power-ups. The players will have to face enemies that alternate each game/round that they will need to defeat in order to get power-ups. With the power ups they collected in the five minutes, the players will assemble and battle it out. Throughout the game, there will be events included and Mashiro Sakurai said that the rules for this game will be similar to those in the “City Trial” of an older Kirby game title, Kirby’s Air Ride.

Other Features
In Super Smash Bros., there is going to be a multitude of additions made to the items, assist trophies, Pokemon, and stages lists. The stages on the Wii U are different from those on the Nintendo 3DS. In addition to the stages, games will be playable in Final Destination map types. Returning items from the Nintendo Direct's video, hosted by director Mashiro Sakurai, included the Beam Sword, Smart Bomb, and Pub Block. New items for Smash will include the Beetle from The Legend of Zelda, Ore Club, Bombachu, X Bomb, Fairy Bottle, Rocket Belt, and more. The Nintendo Direct included trophies such as Midna, Nintendogs, Dark Samus, Dr. Wright, Chain Chomp, Waluigi, and Color TV-Game 15. The release date is so close, yet so far away for those who are eagerly waiting for this game. Super Smash Bros. will no doubt be a hit amongst the gaming community and hardcore Nintendo fans alike.
