Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS is not only coming first but it is also getting an exclusive mode according to a Nintendo Direct broadcast on Tuesday.

Mazuhiro Sakurai confirmed the Smash Run mode will be a playable option for up to four players in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. Inspired by City Trials from Kirby Air Ride, the mode puts players together on an expansive dungeon-like stage to explore and fight randomly selected computer-controlled enemies in a quest to obtain power-ups - Speed, Jump, Attack, Special, Arms and Defense - to make their fighters stronger.

Speed makes fighters run faster; Jump makes fighters jump higher; Attack makes normal attacks stronger; Special makes special attacks stronger, Arms make projectile, item attacks, and throws stronger; and Defense makes fighters harder to launch.

While players explore the stage, fighters will encounter the same events that are activated on the world such as amped up abilities, gale force winds and a swarm of Bullet Bills for example.

The mode comes with a five-minute time limit and allows players to equip items and equipment before entering battle. Once the five minutes are up, the players will then take each other on in a free-for-all match with their powered-up fighters.

Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS is due out this summer while the Wii U version will not arrive until later in the winter.
