Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed several new and returning fighters for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS and Wii U game during a Nintendo Direct broadcast on Tuesday. Some of the new characters appeared in previous entries in the series but weren't playable, some were playable but part of a character and a couple are brand new.

Greninja is all new and you may recognize him as the final evolution of Froakie from Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. He joins the roster as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS

Samus will return her armored but Zero Suit Samus will be an all new character. She and all other characters will no longer change forms. Instead, all characters retain their forms and fighting style through the match. This means that the Zero Suit form needed some upgrades so the Super Smash Bros. team added a pair of jet boots to her wardrobe that increases her jump distance and kick power.

As with Zero Suit Samus, Sheik is another character that appeared in previous Super Smash Bros. games, but will be a unique playable character for the first time. Sheik has new moves like Burst Grenade and Bouncing Fish

In previous games, Yoshi stood on two legs and hunched over, as if Mario were going to jump on top of him at any moment. This new version of Yoshi stands completely upright, making him an even stronger fighter.

After appearing from a Poké Ball in Super Smash Bros. Melee and becoming playable by using Pokémon Trainer in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Charizard is now a selectable character.

Some of the existing fighters gained new moves as well including the Hammer Flip for Kirby. This move powers up by holding the button until it is unleashed. However, not unleashing it once it is fully powered calls it to start to power down. Kirby also gains the Ultra Sword as his Final Smash that will slice through everything.

King Dede now throws Gordos instead of Waddle Dees and Lucario will gain more powerful Aura attacks that are even stronger when damaged. Lucario will also receive his Mega Evolution that allows his Aura attacks to do maximum damage.

Olimar now only has three Pikmin following him and they are also in the same order - Red, Yellow and Blue. Once they are dispatched, Olimar receives the White and Purple Pikimn before going back to the Red. The change was made to make the Pikmin easier to see and manage during match. Olimar also gains Winged Pikmin as his recovery move.

Pit loses his gliding mechanic to downgrade the character but he's been upgraded with the power of flight as a recover move and his Final Smash has been changed to the Three Sacred Treasures.

Other existing characters have also received upgraded move sets.

The new Rosalina and Luma combo also had some of its moves shown including the Luma Shot which sends the star out to do damage and then wander around to attack enemies. Rosaline can even control Lunas attacks while separated. Both characters have different move sets and will be able to cover a lot of ground by fighting on two different sections of the stage.

Little Mac was also covered and revealed to be a powerful ground attack character but very weak while in the air and trying to recover. Additionally, Nintendo is giving him his green grid skin from the original Punch-Out and the ability to power-up a meter to unleash a powerful uppercut. Interestingly, his Final Smash is Giga Mac that basically turns Little Mac into the Hulk.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is due out this while the Wii U version will not be ready until later this winter.
