Kyle Mercury has made some comments in regards to the brand perception for the “Super Smash Bros.” series, which includes the upcoming “Super Smash Bros. 4” on the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. According to a report by Nintendo Life on Aug. 16, the former marketing expert at Nintendo of America describes the “Super Smash Bros.” as dangerous from his perspective.
Kyle Mercury explained that the Nintendo mascots featured in “Super Smash Bros. 4” and the previous installments of the series have “far-reaching brands and franchises unto themselves that have to be considered and protected in a bigger picture view.” As a result, Nintendo was hesitant at allowing a “Super Smash Bros. Melee” tournament at this year’s EVO competition as they were worried that the violent nature of Mario beating up Princess Beach could hurt their brand.
The former marketing expert also reported that Nintendo does not see any financial benefit of “Super Smash Bros. Melee” appearing at EVO as the video game came out years ago for an old system.
The upcoming “Super Smash Bros. 4” may eventually be a part of EVO in the near future. The sequel is expected to come out on the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms next year.
