Super healthy superfood smoothie

With each passing day of summer it seems Los Angeles is getting hotter and hotter. On these sweltering days don’t give in to the gelato or ice cream cravings, just take out the blender. In just a few minutes you can make an ice cold smoothie. Here’s a California Chef recipe for a super healthy smoothie made exclusively with superfoods. It’s only about 165 calories per serving with 14 grams of protein, and makes a great snack or grab and go breakfast.

Superfood Smoothie – one serving

½ cup Greek yogurt½ cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
¼ cupp raw spinach
1 tablespoons raw oatmeal
1 teaspoon almond butter
½ cup ice

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. It couldn’t be any easier!

Why are these ingredients superfoods?

Greek yogurt is a great source of calcium, potassium, protein, zinc, and vitamins B6 and B12. It also contains probiotic cultures that aide in digestion, and it has twice the protein of regular yogurt.

Blueberries pack antioxidants and phytoflavinoids into each small berry. They are high in potassium and vitamin C, and can lower your risk of heart disease and cancer.

Spinach provides a long list of nutrients including vitamin A, vitamin K, Vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium, iron, potassium, carotenoids and flavonoids.

Oatmeal is high in fiber and fiber can help you maintain good cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Almond consumption has been linked to decreasing the risk of heart disease. They are high in healthy fats and Vitamin E, and can help lower cholesterol.
