Super filly Rachel Alexandra beats the boys

Yes Rachel already beat the boys in Preakness Stakes and the Haskell Invitational, but they were all three year-olds.  Today she with jockey Calvin Borel aboard took on the older boys and beat them in the historical Saratoga’s Woodward Stakes!

Rachel Alexandra, a 2006 filly by Medaglia d'Oro out of a Roar mare.  She drew the 3 post position. She faced stakes winners Bullsbay, Macho Again, Da’ Tara, Asiatic Boy and three others. Her competitors have won a combined total of 23 stakes victories.  She carried 118 pounds, while the males were all assigned 126 pounds.  She was met with roar of cheers from the crowd in the post parade and fans holding signs in her support.   She was very fresh before the race and the roar of the crowd made her very excited and she unseated her rider momentarily in the warm up.

Even with fast fractions. she held of a late charge from Macho Again, becoming the first filly to win the Woodward.  She was once again met with cheers after the race.

Rachel has become a celebrity in her own and was featured in the Vogue last month.  Not including the Woodward she has won $2,498,354.  This victory made it 9 wins in a row for Rachel Alexandra and is expected to be Horse of the Year.
