As football fans gear up for Super Bowl XLVII, former New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer gave an interview to USA Today on Thursday, Jan. 31 calling Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis a “caricature” of himself, saying, “when I look at him, I just think hypocrisy.”
“It’s definitely all about him. Once a guy goes to the center of the field, goes into the victory formation on the last play of his last home game…I just don’t think the Giants or any organization I’ve ever been a part of, even growing up, would allow somebody to single themelves [sic] out like that.”
Comparing Ray Lewis to The Rock, Toomer labeled Lewis a “caricature” and added:
“If you want to say you’re Mr. Religious and all of that, have a clean record. Don’t say all of that stuff if you know there’s stuff that might come back. Those are the things that, when I look at him, I just think hypocrisy.”
In 2000 a member of Ray Lewis’ entourage stabbed someone to death in an Atlanta bar. Though Ray Lewis’ involvement in the stabbing was unclear, Ray Lewis was arrested for suspicion of murder, but the charges were eventually dropped.
Amani also called out Ray Lewis as a hypocrite because Lewis has six children with four different women.
Ray Lewis is also currently at the center of a controversy involving a liquid made out of deer antlers, which reportedly contains a substance banned by the NFL. Though a source says he gave Lewis the deer antler liquid, Ray Lewis adamantly denies using the deer antler liquid containing the banned substance. Lewis has not failed any recent drug tests, and the Baltimore Ravens issued a statement saying that the Ravens organization has not been contacted about the situation by the NFL.
