Super Bowl XLVI is this Sunday and the New York Giants and the New England Patriots will be doing battle once again. You may be looking forward to watching the game at home where it will be warm and safe? Yes, most accidents happen in the home, but they are usually your own doing, not caused by someone else.
Why is the game potentially hazardous to your personal safety?
They conducted research published Tuesday indicating that fans do, indeed, have a powerful thirst. In a study that says it is the first to measure the blood alcohol content of fans leaving pro sporting events in the U.S., researchers found 8 percent of fans had a BAC above 0.08 -- the legal limit to drive.
The study says that 8% were over the legal limit, making it illegal if not down right dangerous to drive.
Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis holds about 63,000 plus fans, but that number will be increased to over 70,000 for the 2012 Super Bowl. Based on the study 8% of them will be too drunk to legally drive, that means approximately 5,600 drunks be leaving the stadium.
Not all of them will be driving; some may be taking public transportation. Hopefully they will be in a good mood, because an angry drunk can be hazardous to everyone's safety, especially their own.
Why should I be worried, I don't live in the Indianapolis?
How many drunks will be coming out of the thousands of bars and homes in your area where Super Bowl parties are being held? Do you think that only 8% of them have had too much to drink?
If you have a ticket to the game or plan on heading to your favorite watering hole to watch the festivities, then be prepared to deal with a large number of inebriated fans. It won't be as bad as New Year's Eve, but you will need to be alert.
1) Give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going. No sense adding to the potential hazard by speeding.
2) If a nearby car is driving in a manner that concerns you slow down and let them get ahead of you. It is better to have them in front of you where you can see them and take evasive action if necessary.
3) If you have had too much to drink call a friend, take a cab or some form of public transportation. Don't drive drunk!
4) If you are on a train or bus with some unruly fans it may be easier to get off and take another bus or get into another car on the train than to stay and be annoyed or possibly get into an unnecessary fight.
5) Better yet, why not stay home, invite some friends over and watch the game in the comfort of your own home.
