Every year millions are spent on the coveted Super Bowl slots in the hopes that millions will tune in, and it absolutely works. Many people will tune in to watch the game, but there is another group of individuals who tune in just to see what companies have come up with this year. Here are the top five best and worst ads for Super Bowl XLVI.
The Best:
Audi: Killing Time, Vampire Party
I was rolling my eyes at first. It was so reminiscent of a certain vampire series that I started hating it. That is… until the vampire pulled up in his new Audi and vampires started combusting in its headlights. Then I was laughing my butt off.
Doritos: You Didn’t See Nuthin
Doritos seems to come up big each year and this year was no exception. A man looks the other way as a felinicidal dog bribes him with a bag of Dorritos.
Acura: Transactions, The First One
Seinfeld returns in this mini saga where he goes to extreme lengths to bribe an Acura owner to be “The First One”. It works until Jay Leno sweeps in and steals him at the last second.
This one reminded us of one of the most beloved movies of the 80’s. Matthew Broderick calls in sick and spends the day in his Honda CRV. The homage to the movie was great, but a CRV, dude?
Car companies want to show you how fast their cars can go. Hyundai creatively used this cliché comparison to comic effect. Instead of racing the car, the Cheetah chases down the handler.
The Worst:
Blah. I’m so tired of seeing the bears. They are no longer cute or amusing and this one was least amusing of all. One bear in Giants colors gets upset at the game and goes out and bellows before coming back in. Then the other bear consoles him with a Coke. What the…? The lesson here? Don’t Polarize your commercials!
Ugh. I’m sure this is meant for a demographic other than me, but I think even the guys are fed up with this one especially after their little misstep concerning internet usage. It might have been irreverent, but much funnier and gutsier if they had addressed that rather than going with the same old tired hook.
Century 21: Smarter. Bolder. Faster.
Meh. That’s all I can say. It was a miss for me. The Donald is a turn off for one. As for the others if it were the Winter Olympics perhaps Anton Apollo Ono would be more relevant, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen Deion Sanders. The message was off and I would find this annoying after a couple of viewings.
GE: We Make Beer...Technically
Gah. It started out ok. It was kinda cool to see the parts of a turbine going together, but then they ruined it with the whole beer connection. *facepalm* It’s like your nerdy uncle explaining how something works and then throwing a lame joke on at the end. GE, it didn’t work.
Sigh. It just didn’t work for me. I watched it last night. Nothing. I watched it this morning. Still the same reaction. I just didn’t find it that amusing. I’m not sure what they could have done differently. Seems like it could have been a could concept, it just didn’t quite make it there.
