Super Bowl weather watch: Latest forecasts indicate seasonal, dry day

The NFL championship game between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks will be the first played outdoors in a cold weather city. The potential for cold, wind and snow has the league, fans and teams closely watching what Mother Nature has in store for the game.

With the game five days out the forecast can be hit or miss at this point as much can change in the time between now and the kickoff at 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday. However forecasts from a variety of sources are trending toward a mostly seasonal day in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Average temperatures in Newark, the closest station to MetLife Stadium, are a high temperature of 40 degrees with a low of 25 degrees. The coldest Super Bowl saw a kickoff temperature of 39 degrees so it appears likely this year’s event will break that record.

Following are forecasts for Super Bowl Sunday from the premier forecasting companies and agencies as of the morning of Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Thrown in for good measure is the prediction from the video game Madden NFL 25 as it has correctly predicted the Super Bowl outcome in eight out of the last 10 championships.

AccuWeather: High of 39 degrees, low of 26 degrees. Rain or snow showers possible. Evening temperature at 35 degrees with northwest wind at 8 mph. Partly cloudy.

EA Sports Madden 25: Snow falling and sticking to the field. Narrator noted that despite an early Seahawks lead, “The high-powered Broncos would not go away so easily, thawing as the temperature inside MetLife Stadium dropped.”

National Weather Service: High of 38 degrees, low of 23 degrees. Mostly cloudy. 20% chance of precipitation early in the day. 35 degrees at 6:00 p.m. with northwest winds at 11 mph, gusting to 14 mph.

WeatherBug: High of 39 degrees, low of 24 degrees. Mostly cloudy in the morning then becoming partly sunny. Mostly cloudy overnight.

The Weather Channel: High of 37 degrees, low of 24 degrees. Chance of precipitation 20%, northwest wind at 8 mph.
