This upcoming Sunday marks one of the biggest sporting events in the United States -- the Super Bowl. People are donning team jerseys and readying face paint. Like squirrels gathering supplies for a long winter, fans are getting things together for the big game day - dips, salsas, wings, chips, soda and beer. For some mysterious reason, it has been a set tradition that with any sporting events in the states, beer seems to be the staple alcoholic beverage.
Wine is known to be sophisticated and civil -- as Ernest Hemingway said " Wine is the most civilized thing in the world." Sports, especially football, seem to be slightly "uncivilized". So really wine and the Super Bowl don't seem to have a place with each other. This year, put aside that beer and crack open a bottle of wine. Who said the party can't be civilized? Chances are someone at your party would rather drink wine than beer. With all the salty dishes plus beer -- who wants to be bloated?

What wine goes with the biggest sporting event of the year? Football is an all American sport - seems only appropriate to go with some American wine. Perhaps themed wine for the football "beat down".
Indianapolis Colts fans -- try Wild Horse Chardonnay. This wine is a combination of chardonnay grapes from vineyards in Paso Robles, Santa Maria Valley, and San Benito County. This chard displays flavors of apple, citrus and pear. Creamy with a nice scoring finish. A great chard for only $10.99. Wild Horse also has a nice Merlot that runs about $18. This Merlot has pleasant vanilla and cedar flavors with nice complimentary red berry flavors. Let this breathe a bit and it becomes nice and smooth.
Who dat, who dat, who dat gonna beat dem saints?!?! A perfect wine for a Saints fan is Incognito Red. Runs $17. This red wine is great to celebrate the Saints win and start the Mardi Gras celebration. Smokey, anise and black cherries are a touchdown in a glass. And check out the Mardi Gras beads and Fleur de Lis on the back label!

Both these wines can be found at the Montgomery County Liquor stores as well as at Rodman's in Washington, DC on Wisconsin Avenue. You might want to check with your favorite local wine shop.
This Sunday, don't be an "ain't", be a Saint -- and bring some of your Super Bowl wine to the party! Who Dat?!?!
