Those bad dietary habits do more than just pack on the calories
On Sunday millions will be tuned in to the 46th Super Bowl with the average time of just over three hours gives people enough time to munch out on those unhealthy snacks filled with salt, sugar and loads of high calories. It may taste great munching out in the moment but is it worth all the calories the next day not to mention that just one meal very high in fat you're enjoying while the ball is being kicked is also kicking off your cardiac function in a negative way.
Wellness manager and dietician at the Cleveland Clinic, Kristine Kirkpatrick, M.S, R.D., L.D., states “Eating poorly one day could put you at risk for a heart attack.”
According to Kirkpatrick that one awful night can send you into a spiral effect of more days of awful eating.
Kirkpatrick names pizza as one of the worst offenders of high fat foods. She notes the crust can be filled with cheese pepperoni. The key to healthy eating is moderation and when it comes to pizza she states “Three pieces of pizza is too much."
You may also want to rethink those chicken wings because they usually come fried, high in calories, sodium, carbohydrates and sugar. "Your blood sugar is probably screaming for help," says Kirkpatrick.
She also notes since the Patriot's are competing for the title of Super Bowl champions some hosts may serve New England Calm Chowder but beware Kirkpatrick warns it is high in fat and calories.
Cynthia Sass, MPH, MA, RD, CSSD, of fncimag.com Lifestyle Magazine is also warning people about that Super Bowl Sunday feast. First she notes the phrase “You are what you eat” is true. She tells us the body is continually in maintenance and repair mode. Junk food diets do not provide the body with building blocks your body needs to support hair, skin, muscles, bone, and immune cells. She notes that for every 500 calories you consume that body does not need and cannot burn becomes the equivalent of one stick of butter. Which means to burn those 500 calories based on average weight of a 160 pound person you would need roughly one hour of backpacking, racket ball or high impact aerobics for example.
Here is the good news for Super Bowl Party Sunday offered by various experts.
Today's Health suggests Baked Tostito's Scoops (42 chips) and 6 tablespoons of Tostito's Restaurant Style Salsa gives you 405 calories. Like beer three bottles of Sam Adam's Light 357 calories.
Men's Health offers up these suggestions Popchips Sea Salt & Vinegar (around 20 chips) 120 calories.
Baked Lay Barbeque Flavor 120 calories (14 chips). Ditch the Kraft Cheeze Whiz Original Dip in favor of Tostito's Salsa Con Queso Medium two tablespoons at 40 calories.
Other health risks to remember include extreme over eating may quadruple heart attack risk so you may want to watch how much food you stack on your plate from that buffet table.
Driving under the influence. The New England Journal of Medicine found that a combination of heightened intoxication, lack of attention and fatigue accounts for a 41% spike in the average number of car related deaths following a Super Bowl broadcast.
It has also been estimated that 17 million children will also be watching the game on Sunday and the basic health rules apply. With eating healthy in mind you can make great snacks for the kid's to enjoy too such as Mushroom Pizza Bites and more can be found at Super Healthy Kids
