The Super Bowl is an American tradition that despite which team is playing, everyone seems to watch the game. Some watch for the sport, some for the commercials, and some for the food! This year include your kids in making up a fun party menu that will have something that appeals to every palate in your home.
Survey your family for what they like to eat for party foods when planning your menu. Hands down, wings seems to be the most popular food served at Super Bowl viewing parties. While it's easy to order from a favorite restaurant, it's almost just as easy to make them at home. Making them at home gives you the power to control the ingredients and how they are made. It is surprisingly easy to make a somewhat healthier version of wings. Baked wings under the broiler omit the frying and excess butter added to the traditional recipe. Here are a few recipes to try this Sunday: Unbelievable Baked Chicken Wings, Broiled Buffalo Wings, and instead of wings try Skinny Buffalo Chicken Dip. Besides being healthier, when made at home, the level of "heat" can be adjusted for different tastes. More hot sauce can be added to the finished dish as desired.
Pizza is another popular party food and is a fun food to make with kids. Purchase pre-made dough at your local market (Trader Joe's has a good dough) or make your own. Arrange different toppings on your work surface and let each kid make their own mini-sized pizza with their favorite toppings. Bake for about 10-12 minutes at 425 degrees F. Using a pizza stone helps the crust stay crispy, but a baking sheet will work well too.
A fun finger food that many enjoy is nachos. When made at home, you can customize the toppings to have exactly what you like on those nacho chips. Try a vegetarian version with lots of black beans or go all out with chips piled high with chili. This is a fun food for kids to help with assembly. They can even make their own portion with exactly the toppings they like.
Don't forget to include some fresh veggies for dipping. This is a great way to encourage your kids to eat their vegetables, set a good example that parties don't have to be filled with just junk food, and to try out some different types of dips. A platter of fresh cut cucumber spears, carrot and celery sticks, and broccoli florets goes great with a ranch dip made from plain greek yogurt mixed with a dry ranch dressing mix. This easy dip is healthier than those made with mayo and sour cream! An alternative is dipping those veggies into a favorite flavor of hummus.
Whatever you serve at your Super Bowl Sunday gathering, enjoy the night with your family!
