Beyonce may have brought the house down with her Super Bowl 2013 halftime show performance, but she didn't cause a power surge. According to the NFL, there is a much more logical reason for the Super Bowl power outage that delayed play for over 30 minutes Sunday (Feb. 3) at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
As soon as the lights went out and play was halted, football fans immediately began joking that either a leather-corset-clad Beyonce caused a power surge with the sheer hotness of her halftime show, or a disgruntled 49ers fan must have sabotaged the power due to what looked like an inevitable and unfavorable outcome. According to the NFL, however, an "outside power feed was disrupted" and the system had to be inspected and reset before play could resume.
During the Super Bowl power outage, the roar of the crowd could still be heard, but fans remained calm and collected. Both the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers remained on the field during the delay, with many players moving around or tossing footballs back and forth to stay warmed up. At the time when the power feed cut out and darkened half the stadium, the Super Bowl 2013 score was Baltimore Ravens 28, San Francisco 49ers 6; though the scoreboard temporarily went dark due to the power interruption, when it was restored, it still reflected the same sad situation for the team from California.
We'd join the fans above in trying to blame Beyonce and her sheer hotness, in this case for distracting the 49ers rather than causing the lights to go out, but things on the field were already headed downhill well before the halftime show.
