Super Bowl ads: Kia attempts to answer ‘Where do babies come from?’ in 2013

Companies no longer wait for the big game to unveil their overpriced and highly anticipated Super Bowl commercials. On Feb. 1, Kia Motors America unveiled its 2013 Super Bowl ad called “Where Do Babies Come From?” two days before Super Bowl Sunday 2013.

The Super Bowl commercial features the all-new 2014 Kia Sorento Limited and the spot aims to answer the age-old question: "Where do babies come from?" The protagonist is a young, nervous dad who attempts to answer the delicate question and is rescued by Kia’s new infotainment system. According to a company official, "It's just one of the many new features that help dads get through another day in the adventures of parenting." The story takes place on the distant planet of "Babylandia"and includes baby boys, baby girls, baby dogs, baby pandas, baby everything.

With 2013 Super Bowl commercials selling for a cool $3.8 million per 30-second spot, TV and online ads are expected to generate an excess of $250 million revenue during a game that lasts approximately 3.5 hours. The bar is set higher than ever to produce quality TV ads that will last well beyond the game itself.

In 2012, there was no clear Super Bowl winner, like there was in 2011 with the Volkswagen Darth Vader spot. However, one especially memorable 2012 Super Bowl commercial was a spot for Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep. Clint Eastwood served as the narrator and explained how America overcame adversity and that it’s time to rise again. “We find a way through tough times. How do we come from behind? It’s halftime, America,” Eastwood stated. The commercial was powerful, poignant, timely and one of the most memorable Super Bowl spots in 2012.

For a change, comedy trumped sex appeal during the 2012 Super Bowl. M&M’s, Doritos, Bud Light, Skechers and Chevy all managed to produce humorous Super Bowl commercials that were memorable and entertaining at the same time. The funniest spots were “Happy Grad” by Chevy, “Mr. Quigley” by Skechers and the cheetah commercial by Hyundai. However, a total of seventy commercials aired during the Super Bowl and most were expensive misses.

The 2012 Super Bowl also featured surprise appearances by big name stars including:

  • Elton John (Pepsi)
  • Deion Sanders and Troy Aikman (Bridgestone)
  • Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno (Acura)
  • Betty White (The Voice)
  • Regis Philbin (Pepsi Max)
  • Donald Trump (Century 21)
  • Rachel Dratch (Zaxby’s)
  • The Peanuts, Scooby Doo, the Jetsons and Richie Rich (Metlife)
