In 2012, a group of Penn State alumni, now living in the LA area, formed "Lights. Camera. Cure.," a charity event that raised $37,000 through a six hour dance marathon whose proceeds then went directly to the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, the world's largest student-run philanthropy. Through their combined effort, these Penn Staters were able to raise over $12 million for the Four Diamonds Fund benefiting pediatric cancer. This past year, the same Penn State LA group nearly doubled their money, this time raising $67,851 for the Four Diamonds Fund. For the upcoming 2014 year, their goal has grown even bigger. To accomplish this, they decided to start things a bit early.
On Saturday, Sept 28th a group of Hermosa Beach Penn Staters will put on a Black & White-themed Sunset Soirée on the speculator rooftop of 200 Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach, California. The event, “South Bay Sunset Soirée to Benefit Kids with Cancer” will once again be pooling the money raised that day and then partnering with Children's Hospital of Los Angeles to put together their very own LA Dance-A-Thon.
"Last year, we raised over $67,000 for kids with cancer in advanced of the dance marathon," said organizer and Penn State alumni, Matt Swider.
"There's no better rooftop in South Bay than 200 Pier, so we hope this event will help us top that number, especially when people find out we partnered with the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles this year."
The "South Bay Sunset Soirée to Benefit Kids with Cancer" will run from 5pm to 9pm on Sept. 28th. Guests will enjoy food catered by the surrounding Hermosa Beach restaurants, DJs spinning dance tunes, an open bar, as well as a photo booth for snapshots of guests and their friends. Best of all: the $20 Eventbrite entry fee ($25 at the door) goes entirely toward helping kids with cancer.
