Sunset SAVOR chef and vintner event in San Luis Obispo

Called "America's Happiest City" this town's 45,000 people know their neighbors, barter for services, valet their bikes, have banned fast food and stroll around the pedestrian center. There's lots more to discover in this happy place, and no better time to do it than during the upcoming Sunset Savor event on Sept. 25-28, 2014.

Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast in beautiful San Luis Obispo is a four day fest of culinary immersion presented by Sunset and recognized as the premier wine and food event in the West.

Twilight at Hearst Castle

For 2014, 'Sunset at Hearst Castle' is the special setting for the opening evening on Sept. 25. The following days offer culinary and outdoor adventure tours led by Sunset experts, focused on botanical spa, farm to table cuisine, Paso Robles winemaking, a Santa Margarita Ranch Lamb Jam and Arroyo Grande foodie adventures.

Sunset is savvy

“Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast is one of the most accessible, regionally authentic wine and food events around,” said Peggy Northrop, Sunset Editor-in-Chief. “The seminars and adventure tours are a great way to discover special destinations alongside wine and food celebrities in a relaxed, intimate atmosphere...to connect with the artisans behind the region’s fantastic wine and food, and the land where they’re grown.”

Highlights for chef and winemaker seminars

Chef Fabio Viviani | Bringing Italian Flavor (Sept. 27-28):

The star of Bravo’s hit reality series, "Top Chef," Fabio Viviani "Does Duck." He leads two seminars from the pages of his New York Times bestseller, "Fabio’s Italian Kitchen." On Saturday, he’ll show guests how to make duck sausage-Fabio-style and on Sunday, he’ll guide the creation of gorgeous gnocchi.

Chef Tanya Holland | Serving Up Soul (Sept. 27-28):

San Francisco Bay Area's own Tanya Holland is a regularl contributor to "The Today Show" and "The Talk," on hand with her new book – "Brown Sugar Kitchen New-Style, Down-Home Recipes from Sweet West Oakland." Chef Holland will be demonstrating two signature dishes from "BSK" to include Saturday's jerk baby back ribs and Sunday's dish, buttermilk fried chicken and waffles.

Lamb Jam Masters Finale (Sept. 28):

Time for the people's choice. Winning chefs from Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. who competed in the 2014 American Lamb Jam National Tour battle it out to determine this year’s Lamb Jam Master. Guests vote on the finalist dishes accompanied by commentary by Sunset Food Editor Margo True.

International Sparkling Display (Sept. 27):

Tasting and learning combine in this discovery through the world of sparkling wine, featuring samples of bubbles from around the world.

Grow Wild with Paso Robles Wines (Sept. 28):

Showcasing six wines from top producers of Paso Robles Wine Country, recently named 2013 Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

How Well do you Know Your Wines? Test Your Blind Tasting Skills (Sept. 28):

A perennial favorite, here's a chance to test your ability to distinguish a Cabernet Sauvignon from a Pinot Noir in a blind tasting.

Create Botanical Spa Products with Sycamore Mineral Springs in Avila Beach (Sept. 25):

Take an exclusive tour of the resort’s on-site organic garden, normally closed to the public. It's followed by tips on making one-of-a-kind luxurious spa products and a multi-course "garden to fork" lunch prepared by Chef Gregg Wangard.

Blend Wild Wine near Ancient Peaks at Historic Santa Margarita Vineyard (Sept. 25):

A special opportunity for guests to be guided by master winemakers through creating an own blend, including bottling and labeling, followed by a gourmet lunch.

Roam with the Clydesdales at Covell Ranch in Cambria (Sept. 26):

A perfect, relaxing time seeing beautiful stands of native pine trees from a spectacular vantage point. A hay wagon pulled by Clydesdale horses is followed by a deluxe picnic lunch paired with local Central Coast wines.

Explore the Farm and Foodie Secrets of Arroyo Grande (Sept. 26):

A walking tour created for food lovers goes through historic Arroyo Grande, including tasting samples from some of the Central Coast's best, followed by lunch in the village.

Preservation Meets Innovative Traditions at Halter Ranch (Sept. 26):

A walking tour created for wine lovers at the height of the grape harvest. Learn how this historic ranch follows certified sustainable farming practices and innovative techniques, a comprehensive tasting of Halter Ranch wines, followed by a harvest lunch with the winemakers.

Celebrate Autumn’s Harvest at Windrose Farm in Paso Robles (Sept. 26):

Tour the farm at the peak of harvest, sample an array of the farm’s signature heirloom tomatoes. Enjoy homegrown Bloody Marys made with local RE:FIND distillery spirits and end the tour with a farm-to-fork picnic lunch by Avila’s Ocean Grill.

Become a Balsamic Vinegar Guru in Atascadero (Sept. 26):

Travel to an organic garden for the finest artisan vinegars, followed by a trip to the elegant historic Atascadero City Hall for a tasting of fresh-from-the-garden vinegar flavors. The tour ends with an artisanal lunch to showcase Chaparral Gardens vinegar.
