The game is a clear attempt by Insomniac to return to its roots of colorful games full of crazy enemies, weapons and gameplay mechanics following the rather dull flop that was “Fuse”. “Sunset Overdrive” is set in the open-world of Sunset City where the introduction of the energy drink, Overcharge Delirium XG, has turned much of the populace into mutant zombies of varying power and abilities.

Players must equip themselves with over-powered weapons and highly mobile skills to survive and kill the mutants in style. Cover mechanic players need not apply as players can run, grind, zip-line, wall-run, and bounce off the hoods of cars to traverse multiple levels of the city.

“Sunset Overdrive” comes with multiple customization options as well both for the player and the weapons. Players will be able to create their own characters from body part and clothing choices while the Amps system will let you craft your own weapons from recipes scattered around the system along with cans of Overcharge.

Insomniac cites multiple influences for the game including “Jet Set Radio”, “Prince of Persia” and “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater”. “Dead Rising 3” is another influence with the number of enemies that are on screen at the same time.

“Sunset Overdrive” will be released this fall to the Xbox One but no specific date has been revealed yet. However, Microsoft did announce that the game will receive a Day One Edition that comes with in-game items. The “Nothin’ but the Hits” gun is an overcharged version of the High Fidelity gun that launches limited edition, priceless, multi-colored vinyls that do increased damage. The “It’s Me! Fizzie!” outfit lets you dress up as the Overcharge mascot. Finally, the “Hardcore! Hammer” allows players to equip a mighty hammer made from a bat and spiked dumb-bells.
