Sunscreen's dirty little secret

When you are outside in the sun for extended periods of time, it has been recommended to use sunblock or sunscreen for decades. It’s supposed to coat your skin with a protective layer and not let harmful rays through. That sounds simple and straight forward. However, that is just part of the story.

Studies performed by a nonprofit group named EWG (Environmental Working Group) have showed that many conventional sun protection options are not as helpful as they make it seem. They make claims that common ingredients in sunscreens can actually lead to cancer as well. One of these ingredients is called retinyl palmitate, which is a form of vitamin A, and is often touted as a benefit of the sunscreen. These claims are backed by recent FDA findings that state when retinyl palmitate is applied to skin it heightens skin cancer risk.

The EWG site also makes the following points. Claims by sun protection companies that their product can provide 50+ SPF values have never been proved that they are safer than lower rated products. Additionally people who use high SPF value protection may stay out in the sun longer and re-apply less because they think they are better protected.
