Sunny skies greet Thorne runners

Sunny skies and moderate temperatures greeted the 500 plus runners at the 12th Annual Michael W. Thorne Scholarship 4 Mile Run/Walk held on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in West Long Branch, N.J.

The event was held in memory of Michael W. Thorne who on July 3, 1984 at the age of 20 lost his life working as a volunteer fireman. Proceeds from the event are used to fund a scholarship in his name.

The 4 mile race started at 9 a.m. alongside Franklin Lake. The runners lined up and made a circuitous route through the neighborhoods of the borough before returning back for a finish by the lake.

Coming in first overall and for the men was Robert Cavenaugh who resides right next to the finish in West Long Branch in a time of 20:38.

For the women it was Katie Connor of Rumson in a time of 24:22.

After the 4mile race kids races of various distances were held to include a half mile and mile race for those 14 and under.

Awards were presented to overall and age group winners. A special award was presented to the Tinton Falls Fire Department with the most participants from a fire department.

Many of the volunteers and participants then went over to the local fire house for a post-race celebration.

The summer racing season kicks off next Saturday with the Spring Lake 5. Lots more events coming up can be found on the Race Calendar.

For anyone looking to runtheir first 5K or get ready for fall half marathons groups will be starting in July. Check it out and get out and run.
