Fall sure was in full swing this weekend in the Rockford area. Temperatures Saturday bottomed out at 41 degrees in Rockford, which is some 55 degrees cooler than Tuesday’s 96 degree high! Saturday’s low was the coolest since May 24th – almost 4 months ago! Sunday’s high only reached 59 degrees, which has not happened since May 25th. The pull back in temperatures from Tuesday to this weekend was like going from mid-July to late-October in a span of 4 days.
Sunday also saw some much needed and welcomed rain. This was the first measurable precipitation since September 11th. Officially Rockford received 1.10 inches of rain, the heaviest since August 6th. The 1.10 inches of rain pushes our monthly total to 1.15 inches, which is over half an inch below where we should be, and doesn’t make up for the huge deficits in rain totals in August and July.
The good news is after a couple of dry days Monday and Tuesday, scattered storms look possible Wednesday, Thursday, and into Friday. An area of high pressure, currently just north of the area, will quickly move off to the east. As it does warm and humid air will flood into the area starting overnight Tuesday. Temperatures Wednesday and Thursday should be near 80 or in the lower 80s. Scattered storms will be possible Wednesday morning through Friday morning near and ahead of the next cold front.
A cold front will knock our temperatures down some for the weekend and dry us out. This weekend looks like a classic early fall weekend in northern Illinois with temperatures in the low 70s by day and near 50 by night with dry conditions. The pull back in temperatures is to be brief as longer range computer models indicate much of next week could be warm, with temperatures in the upper 70s to near 80.
