Helen Woodward Animal Center

Just in time for the Lucky holiday, Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) will be hosting its 5th Annual Puppy Love 5K Run/Walk. Festivities are scheduled for this Sunday, March 16th from 7:00 a.m. until Noon. Happy, healthy heart participants will be high “tailing’ it on Highway 101.

Blue Buffalo is presenting this great fundraiser in hopes of bringing luck to the orphaned animals at HWAC so that they find their forever homes. The Center believes in the magic of occasions such as this; knowing that the mischievous twist will display just how important the human-animal bond is! They are hoping to harness some St. Patty’s Day luck for their orphaned pets by turning Scenic Highway 101 in Solana Beach into a rainbow road complete with adoptable pup-rechauns. The lucky imps will line up alongside the road to say a very special surprise “thank you” to race participants.

In addition to the run and walk races (running begins at 8:00 a.m. and walking at 8:20 a.m.), the festivities will feature St. Patrick’s Day-themed fun at the “After Paw-ty” in the Wagging Wellness Village. Families and teams will gather to celebrate their luck of having found fabulous furry friends with music, a human-canine costume contest, dog agility, food, dozens of interactive health and pet related booths and kid’s activities including face painting and take-home crafts. As always, HWAC has made this a family fun event!

Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and then the race kicks off at 8:00 a.m. with Celebrity Grand Marshals Brandi Williams from KUSI News starting the run and Surf Dog Dozer leading the Walk. Following the race, Magic 92.5’s Jagger and Kristi, as well as L’Auberge’s Del Mar Luxury Pet Host, Sofie, will serve as host and judges during the Lucky Dog Costume Contest and the Dog & Owner Pairs Costume Contest.

This is the fifth year of the event; a good way to welcome a much-needed spring and to get your heart in healthy condition to boot. You and your pet will also gain the happy-hearted satisfaction of knowing that all proceeds will go to support the pets and programs of the Helen Woodward Animal Center!

Race entry for the 5th Annual Puppy Love 5K is $35 for adult runners and walkers and $15 for junior runners and walkers with great team discounts available. It is not too late to sign up! For more information or to register, visit or call 858-756-4117 x379. Online registration closes at 3:00 p.m on Saturday. Day-of on-site registration begins at 7:00 a.m on the morning of event.

This is a dog friendly event – please do bring Fido! Dogs will be permitted on the course & event area.
