Sunday Dialogue: Is the government a good substitute for God?

See also

There are many scriptures in the Bible that admonishes the people to obey the civil law and leaders in the world. That is for the good of them and everyone else. Good laws that are made based on the Ten Commandments and keeping them as much as possible is always a good thing. Bad laws are those that diabolically oppose the Ten Commandments.

We find a scripture in 1 Timothy 2:2 that explains it is good to have law and order. It says that we should pray for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

When Jesus was asked about whether it was lawful or not to pay taxes, he said, Luke 20:25 “He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”

Keywords here are: Things that are God’s.

However in Acts 5:29, Peter said, “We must obey God rather than men.”

The Bible also has a lot to say about those in places of leadership who are corrupt in 2 Corinthians, “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”

The question is “Does the government makes a good substitute for God?”

What do we get from the government in America compared to what we receive from God? Which is the better way?

What governments can and cannot do:

1. They can only use what they take from someone else. It has no power in of its own – all of its power must be derived from the people.
2. They cannot control things that are only reserved and controlled by God. They cannot create life –but they can take it.
3. They have no power over the elements of the earth or sky. They cannot control the weather or the positions of the stars.
4. They can only give to one what they take from another.
5. They are limited in knowledge and can only govern from a mediocre and limited intelligence.
6. They can only interfere or intervene in the affairs of the citizens to the extent that the citizens allow. They have no magic wands and no miracle making machines.
7. They are easily corrupted and easily led along the ways of greed, self-indulgence, and gluttony for power and wealth.
8. While the government pretends to be wise and for the people, they can change laws the lying pen of the scribes making what was meant for truth into a lie. Jeremiah 8:8
9. The government cannot create science – they can only study and discover what God has already made and created. They cannot possibly have the knowledge of the one who created the universe and everything and everyone in it.
10. The government cannot know the souls, hearts and minds of the people in ways that they can communicate with them through prayer and meditation. They can only see, hear, and smell that which is obvious to everyone. God knows the inner man and can intervene in his mental, spiritual, and physical life. They do not hold the keys to eternal, everlasting life. All that they do is temporary.

It is no secret what God can do. It was once penned in a song that explains it beautifully.

"It Is No Secret"

The chimes of time ring out the news
Another day is through
Someone slipped and fell,
Was that someone you?
You may have longed for added strength
Your courage to renew
Do not be disheartened
I have news for you.

[Chorus:]

It is no secret what God can do,
What he has done for others,
He'll do for you.
With arms wide open,
He'll pardon you

It is no secret what God can do.
There is no night, for in His light
You’ll never walk alone.
You'll always feel at home wherever you may roam,
There is no power can conquer you,

While God is on your side.
Take Him at His promise,
Don’t run away and hide.

America was great one time because America believed in God rather than man. They looked to God rather than the government. The government has it place but is not ordained by God when the government plays god.

Galatians 1:10 “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

1 Thessalonians 2:4 “But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.”

John 12:43 “For they loved the glory that comes from man - more than the glory that comes from God.”

Colossians 3:23 ”Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Governments are temporary, but God is eternal. Governments have to take before they can give – and God gives out of the abundance of His own love and power.

How has American government been usurping the position of God in our lives? What is the duty of the American government under the Constitution? The Preamble to the Constitution wraps up the rights of Americans into one simple statement:

The Constitution’s Preamble says: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

The Constitution calls for the people to govern themselves and to make their own laws and not be subject to dictatorship made laws. The Constitution of the United States allowed for the individual states rights to govern their own states; which today is mostly just words on paper. The rights of the states have been swallowed up by the federal government so as to leave little distinction between the two.

What is a democratic form of government?

“In a Democracy the supreme power is retained by the people. People vote on the actions they want their government to take, such as new taxes, health care or representatives.”

“People can run for office and get elected to form part of the government; such as the President, vice president, state representatives and other various positions.”

In a democracy, people usually elect representatives. In the USA, each state has 2 Congressmen or Congresswomen, and the state gets another set of representatives for the amount of people in their state. Democracy allows you to vote and elect representatives to form the government

What is a socialist form of government?

In this type of government the planning, producing, and distributing goods is controlled by a central government. If you were a dairy farmer and produced lots of milk, the government would take your milk and share it with your fellow countrymen. A socialism government does this to theoretically seeks a more just and equitable distribution of property and labor.

What is a monarchy form of government?

“A monarchy is a form of government where the supreme power is in the hands of a monarch who reigns over a state or territory. The monarch rules usually for a life time and by hereditary right is born into royalty. The monarch may be either a sole absolute ruler and is responsible for their country.”

What is a dictator form of government?

“In a dictatorship, there would be one person or a group a people that declare themselves rulers of the land. This dictator will have all the power. He is able to give and take anything from his or her people. In a dictatorship there, the ruler usually lives in luxury and richness while the rest of the people live in fear of the rulers power.”

What is anarchy form of government?

Anarchy is the type of government where there is no government at all. Every person is left to fight for themselves. People must continue to live through farming on their own land, find water, and build a home on their own. No one tells you what to do, and there is no voting. This type of government usually ends up in people fighting over food, water, land and other things. There is no police to keep the peace.”

What is a communist for, of government?

Communism - a system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single -- often authoritarian -- party holds power; state controls are imposed with the elimination of private ownership of property or capital while claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people. It was said that in communism, the government takes your pig and gives you back the ears.

What is the “Godless form of Government?

God, Himself, walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden, and sin entered the world, but God did not abandon his people. He worked through the prophets and the judges to rule over mankind and then they decided they did not want a divine leadership, but a king like all the others had, and God warned them of what was to come if they chose a king over divine leadership.

He warned them that once they established an earthly form of government; there would be no turning back. However, God still did not abandon His people. He allowed them through their own failures to come upon a Constitutional form of government written by men of God and written on God’s principles. That form of government worked for centuries and was a blessing to the greatest country ever formed; and yet today – we see a decline in God’s blessings in this country because now America is choosing other forms of government not ordained by God. Will God now ultimately abandon the people?
