The Sunday Assembly movement was started in the U.K. by comedians Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans. It is known as a "Church without the god bits." Portland also has a branch, with two big events scheduled in May.
The first in on Sun. May 11th at 6 pm. This one is held at the Dishman Community Center in N.E. Portland. Details can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/Sunday-Assembly-Portland/events/177597482 .
The second event is on Sunday May 18th at 11 am at the Mission Theater in N.W. Portland. Details can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/Sunday-Assembly-Portland/events/177598262 .
What do they do? They have sing-along songs (popular secular songs), and inspirational talks, all without promoting the concept of Gods or the supernatural. Atheist, agnostics, and people of any belief system are welcome to attend. It is just a fun time to gather as a community to sing, learn, and make new friends.
There's nothing bad about gathering as a community. As Sanderson once said: "A lot of people say, ‘I’ve got a problem with organized religion.' But, that’s stupid, organization is one of the best things about religion.”
