Robot and Frank won the Alfred P Sloan Feature Film Prize last night at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival Awards in Park City, Utah, that was accepted by first-time director Jake Schreier. It was fun to see two of the film’s stars, Frank Langella (Frank) and James Marsden (Hunter) at the T-Mobile Village at the Lift, and then go to the Robot and Frank Cocktail and Hors d’oeuvres Reception at the MoroccanOil Supper Suite at the Montage Deer Valley resort during a major snowstorm.
This dramatic comedy has an all-star cast, including Frank Langella (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Susan Sarandon (You Don’t Know Jack), James Marsden (Superman Returns), Liv Tyler (The Incredible Hulk), and Peter Saarsgard (Green Lantern/ who plays the voice of the robot.)
The Alfred P Sloan Prize is given to films that explore themes of science and technology, or depict scientists, engineers or mathematicians in engaging ways. In this film, Frank is a retired thief, who lives by himself, and Frank’s son (Hunter/James Marsden) presents him with a robot as a caretaker. Frank’s daily routine includes visits to the library (and the Librarian is brilliantly played by Susan Sarandon.) While Frank and his fast-track daughter (Liv Tyler) initially resist the robot, he starts to appreciate the benefits of nutritious meals and a clean house. The robot soon becomes Frank’s accomplice when he decides to take up his old career, and this movie is a must-see.
During the Robot and Frank cocktail party at the Montage Deer Valley, it was fun to meet friends of the producers, Nischelle Turner from CNN (formerly Good Day LA on Fox 11 in Los Angeles), Debbie Vandermeulen (Fusion Features) and Joshua Johnson (U-eefoundation.org Foundation Founder) in the snowstorm.
We drove up the hill at 4:00pm from Park City for The Creative Coalition Art & Soul book signing at Robert Coin at this spectacular resort, and were fortunate to be invited to the Robot and Frank party so we just stayed because the main road got closed (and if you go there, you'll see why we didn't want to leave.) Many thanks to the Robot and Frank party sponsors, including MoroccanOil (A must-have in Park City and/or for anyone who doesn’t want frizzy hair. Can you tell the I use this product?), Robert Coin, Marcel Vigneron, and Johndrow Vineyard. And congratulations again to Robot and Frank for your Alfred P Sloan Feature Film Prize last night.
