(SPOILER ALERT) Sunday night was the True Blood season finale. If you have not seen it yet, please do not read any further.
In a season that started off with Bill becoming a god by drinking Lilith’s blood at the end of last season, the writers of the show left us with a huge question. Has Alexander Skarsgard left the show?
The episode begins after the funeral of Terry Bellefleur (Todd Lowe). Todd’s departure after 6 years on the show was sad and a surprise to many of the faithful, but it was handled beautifully. His last scenes with Arlene (Carrie Preston) were beautiful and her scenes at Terry’s funeral gave this Carrie a chance to shine. But Terry was not the only character to come to an end this season. Three of Andy Bellefleur’s four fairy daughters were killed by Jessica after she could not resist the scent of their blood. Luna Garza (Janina Gavankar) dies after becoming romantically involved with Sam. Governor Burrell (Arliss Howard) met his end at the hands of Bill, when Bill ripped his head off in broad daylight after finding out the Governor had captured Jessica and placed her in the evil vamp camp. Bill was able to walk in the light after ingesting some Warlow's fairy/vamp blood. Bill left the governor’s head in the garden of the governor’s mansion as a reminder that he meant business. Nora (Lucy Griffiths) met her end after being injected with the Hep V virus in the vamp camp. The departure of Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) came as no surprise after Eric goes on a rampage in the vamp camp to stop the infected True Blood from being used and distributed. Bill follows Eric to the camp and saves the trapped vamps who were going to be exposed to the sun. He feeds all of the vamps in the light chamber…but Steve just doesn’t get to share in the Warlow blood and his character goes crispy while declaring his love for Jason Stackhouse. Warlow himself (Rob Kazinsky) meets his end at the hands of Jason and Rutger Hauer. (Yes, Rutger is back in the finale.) This is after Warlow hits Sookie after she changes her mind about becoming his fairy /vamp bride and begins to terrorize her. Jason, Rutger and Andy's remaining fairy daughter rally to save Sookie from Warlow.
There are so many characters gone from this season, some surprising and some a relief, but the one character's story line that has generated so much speculation today is that of Alexander’s character Eric Northman. After the vamps are freed and they are high off the fairy blood, Pam looks for Eric. She sees him standing alone and for a split second it looks like Eric and Pam may reunite. But it is not to be. Eric takes off and is later seen on a mountain top naked and sunbathing and reading a book. When Warlow meets his end, every vamp who has ingested the fairy blood through Bill is no longer able to walk in the light. Eric feels the change…gets up and gives us a full frontal view before he begins to go up in flames.
The internet has been buzzing about this scene. First all of the Skarsgard fans are raving about being able to see him the buff…then the disbelief that the writers could end the character. While there has been no official announcement of Skarsgard leaving, you do see Eric going up in flames. Will Eric Northman return? Did Pam somehow save him? We’ll have to wait until Alexander confirms his departure or for the official announcement from HBO. On another note...is Bill in love with Sookie...again? Arlene owns what used to be Merlot's? Sam is the Mayor?
Once again True Blood has given the fans quite a bit to talk about until the show returns in January 2014.
Until then, feed carefully and don't forget the sunscreen.
True Blood is seen every Sunday night on HBO at 8 pm Central time.
