Saturday, April 6, 2013, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., is Organic Veggie Gardening 101 Workshop with Pat Munts, long time gardener, garden writer and WSU Master Gardener. She will explain what organic gardening is, and how to grow a productive garden without chemicals, as well as sharing tips and tricks to build healthy soil and keep bad bugs away. Also on Saturday, April 6, 2013, is Herbs in the Garden Workshop from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sarah Patterson, Certified Clinical Herbalist, will talk about growing and using medicinal herbs. As well as teaching how to grow herbs in the Inland Northwest she will give instructions on how to properly harvest for maximum benefit. Also covered will be the medicinal qualities of several easy to grow herbs and recipes for herbal vinegars and honeys. Preregistration required; 20 spots available. Worms are the top on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., when Cliff Winger, Master Composter/Recycler and vermiculture expert presents Vermicomposting Workshop. See active worm bins, learn the benefits of worm composting and how to care for the worms, learn how to avoid common problems and how to build an inexpensive worm bin. On Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Marilyn and Chris Carothers, urban homesteaders and Master Composters/Recyclers, will present Fast Hot Composting 101: the best methods for composting outdoors, hot and slow composting techniques, and the basics of how to turn your kitchen waste into a great garden amendment. The workshop is sponsored by the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System’s Master Composters/Recyclers Program, and is free; please bring at least a gallon sized container of material to put into the compost as your entrance fee. Bees take center stage on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Beverly Bailey, a beekeeper for more than 20 years with 2 to 5 active hives a year, presents Growing Your Own Bee Garden. She will teach you what plants are most nutritious for these important pollinators and how to cultivate them in your garden. Preregistration is required; 20 spaces available.
