Sun Devils drop Buffalos, get to 2-0 in conference play

Just as they have done all season the ASU men’s basketball team pulled off another improbable victory Sunday night as they defeated the Colorado Buffalos in front of a crowd of 6,298 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Up to this point in the season the Devils have pretty much won the games that they were supposed to win. However, Colorado came to town with the number 6 RPI rating in the country. As if that weren’t enough, the Buffalos were coming off of a heartbreaking loss to the University of Arizona on a buzzer beater shot that clearly left the shooters hand before the buzzer sounded.

All of these things looked like a recipe for disaster for the Sun Devils and for the first ten minutes of the game that is exactly what it was. The Buffalos jumped out to a quick 20-7 advantage before the Devils fought back to close the gap to 33-30 at the half. The second half was dominated by the Sun Devils defense as they held Colorado to just 10 buckets on 38 attempts and a measly 1 for 12 from behind the three point arc. The devils struggled once again from the free throw line but managed to escape with a 65-56 win.

The victory puts the Devils at 13-2 on the season but more importantly puts them in a first place tie in the Pac 12 Conference at 2-0. This is only the fourth time that the Devils have started conference play 2-0 since 1978. Now that the team has a signature win with its defeat of Colorado the NCAA Tournament dream seems a bit closer, let’s hope they can continue to fight and finish strong.
