Holding the ninth overall pick in 2012 WNBA draft, the Connecticut Sun decided to become active players in the free agent market and bolstered their frontcourt presence by signing veteran forward Mistie Mims, it was announced today.
Mims, the former Mistie Bass, has appeared in 120 games over five seasons with the Houston Comets and Chicago Sky. Selected 21st overall out of Duke in the 2006 draft, the 6-foot-3 forward was signed as an insurance policy on former UConn star Jessica Moore in the Connecticut frontcourt. Moore, currently a free agent, has recently undergone an arthroscopic procedure on her left knee and is currently in rehabilitation.
Although she did not play in the WNBA in 2011, Mims is currently leading the French League in scoring with a 19.7 average for Challes-Les-Eux, where she was named MVP among foreign players last year after averaging 19.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest.
“We were in the free agent market because we’re not sure Jessica Moore is going to be able to play at the beginning of the season,” explains Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault said. “Mistie is somebody we have been looking at for a couple of years. She can play both post positions and fits into our style. Mistie is a post player who can run the floor, is a good offensive rebounder and a good defender in our defensive scheme, particularly against the posts we have to face in our conference. She will be able to play with either Tina [Charles] or Asjha [Jones] and complement them.
“She is a high, high energy player, and I think she will fit in great with the personalities on our team. The chemistry will be terrific with her.”
The Sun will open their 10th season on May 19 when they travel to Newark, N.J. to take on the New York Liberty. The home opener is the following day, May 20, against the Liberty at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
