Summer triathlon opportunities for youth

If you are wondering what your kids will want to do this summer, consider exposing them to triathlon. Not only does this sport provide structure to their exercise program, it also offers varied experiences (swimming, cycling and running) and the chance for kids to find out which sports they like the most.

Boulder’s supportive environment for youth athletics and for triathlon provides a lot of summer opportunities. A one-day clinic that goes over all the basics is scheduled for June 14. And a non-profit organization bringing kids into triathlon is starting a new program in Boulder.

First, for the clinic.

The second annual kids’ triathlon clinic is all set for Saturday, June 14, 8:30 am to 12 noon. The clinic will happen at Boulder Reservoir with the generous support of the Ironman 70.3 transition area (the 70.3 takes place the next day).
USA Triathlon sanctioned with nearly a dozen coaches and more volunteers on hand, the clinic is open to kids from age 5 and up, who will be in appropriate age groups to learn about swimming, cycling, running and transitions.

Several of the pro triathletes competing in the 70.3 the next day will be on hand to talk with the kids and provide tips and motivation.

The cost is $20 and the event is limited to 80 kids.

This is a fun event, whose main goal is for the kids to gain exposure to triathlon in a fun, safe, expertly coached setting.

If your kids want a more in-depth experience, check out Kids That TRI and Teens That TRI. This non-profit organization founded by USA Triathlon-elite coach Bob Seebohar offers three workouts per week under the supervision of two USA Triathlon-certified coaches at every workout. Kids will learn proper swimming, cycling and running technique, how to make fast transitions and get in quality workouts.

Coach Bob Seebohar’s main emphasis is safety, followed closely by fun and then technique and knowledge about how to complete a triathlon. Kids That TRI has programs in Denver, Littleton, Superior and Fort Collins in addition to the new program in Boulder.
