If you are sick of the heat and summer weather, then head south. There are plenty of resorts in the southern hemisphere and it's winter there right now. Here are a quick run down of some of the resorts.
- Ski Portillo, Chile. Located 2 hours away from Santiago, Chile, this resort is a must for any die-hard skier or rider. Portillo limits its guests to 450. If it happens to snow while you are there, you will have the place to yourself! Its five and four person surface lifts are a great way to get laps in. Plus, the hotel is incredible. If you go once, you will want to go again.
- Las Lenas, Argentina. If you are an expert skier or rider, this is a must on your to-ski or to-ride lift. The Marte chair is what it is all about. When that chair is open, the amount of extreme choices you have are endless. However, sometimes that chairlift can go down due to wind. The nearest city to Las Lenas is Mendoza which is famous for its wine. Try the beef while you are down there. It is unbelievable.
- Treble Cone, Wanaka, New Zealand. If you want to head to Aotearoa which is the Maori name for New Zealand, you will not be disappointed. With plenty of skiable acres and plenty of snow. New Zealand is a longer trip and definitely worth it. Where else can you make some turns, eat a beef pie, and see millions of sheep? Treble Cone in Wanaka, NZ is definite the skier/rider's mountain. The Southern Alps are great for skiing and riding!
- Perisher Blue, Australia. Yes, there is skiing and riding in Australia. Perisher Blue is one of the largest. It is very similar in terms of vertical to the Applachian Mountains in the Eastern U.S. The only difference is that you are skiing and riding in summer and through Snow Gum Trees!
The southern hemisphere has something for everyone. So if you are getting the itch to make some turns, look into heading south. If not this year, then maybe next.
