The Pikes Peak Road Runners (PPRR) summer schedule is packed full of thrilling races with something for everyone, from beginner to pro, road runners, trail runners, sprinters and marathoners. The brisk schedule will assure that everyone will get a chance to run plenty of races, set some PR's and have a great time in the summer of 2014.

This summer's events include benefit runs for the Wild Animal Sanctuary and U.S. Military Veterans, the venerable PPRR Summer Series, the Triple Crown of Running, a new race on the Barr Trail and the 14th annual American Discovery Trail Marathon on Sep 1 to finish up the summer running season. The PPRR also participates in trail cleanup days and other civic minded activities for those who would like to get involved.

The Into the Wild Running Festival is an especially important event held to support the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, who's mission is to "prevent and alleviate cruelty to animals which are abandoned or subject to deprivation or neglect". The Into the Wild Running Festival will be running this weekend with TAC certified courses for 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon runners.

As for PPRR races, the Veterans Home Run coming up on June 28 is a favorite for former PPRR president and current board member John Gardner, “It’s a fund raiser for the Crawford House which helps homeless veterans dealing with substance abuse issues. It’s one of my favorites as their mission is close to my heart. Also, the Crawford House residents volunteer at the aid station and help with race organization. This has been a life changing experience for many of them.”.

Another PPRR veteran volunteer, Peter Maksimows, is the new race director along with Brandon Stapanowich, for the exciting Barr Trail Mountain Race. “The BTMR will be help Sunday, July 13th and is a very demanding 12.6 mile mountain race that starts at the Cog Railway, climbs almost 4,000 ft to Barr Camp (10,200 ft) before turning around and coming back down. The race was started by Matt Carpenter and prides itself on donating 100% of race proceeds to area non-profits, volunteer organizations and high track and cross country programs. Our website is: runpikespeak.com.”.

The PPRR Summer Series is described in detail on the PPRR website, and “is a participation series of five events from May through September. This is non competitive and the emphasis is getting runners out for some exercise and fun. It is geared towards beginning runners, but anybody is welcome to participate. The events are also very achievable for kids, thus bring your kids out to join in the fun. All you need to do is participate and finish at least 3 of the 5 events.”.

The Triple Crown of Running is always a big draw in Colorado Springs and kicks off this year with the Garden of the Gods 10 mile run on June 8. The Triple Crown consists of three events, the Garden of the Gods Run, the Summer Roundup Trail 12k Run on July 6, followed by the grand finale, the famous Pikes Peak Ascent and Pikes Peak Marathon. held on Saturday and Sunday, Aug 16 and 17.

The summer of 2014 is shaping up to be one of the greatest running seasons ever in the Colorado Front Range. Grab your running shoes and suntan lotion and hit the streets and trails with the PPRR. The benefits to your health and to the institutions these races will benefit are immeasurable. If you've never participated before, this is the summer to get started.
