Combining arts, crafts and exploration to learn about the Cape Cod environment

The staff at Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary has come up with some great themes. Week One (June 27 – July 1), explore the Wonders of Water here on the Cape, which is surrounded by ocean and covered with salt marshes and freshwater ponds. Week Two (July 5 – 8) is devoted to the invertebrates, focusing on intertidal creatures from the ancient horseshoe crab to local jellyfish species.

Week Three (July 11 – 15) the Herps – reptiles and amphibians – take center stage and Week Four (July 18 – 22) will find the kids learning Native American survival skills. The Dragons of the Sky, dragon and damselflies, bees and their kin, are the stars of Week Five (July 25 – 29).

More wildlife plus farm animals and gardens during Wild Arts and Ecology programs

Then it’s on to the world of animals Stuck in a Shell for Week Six (August 1 – 5) for children to learn about mussels and snails and other shelled creatures. Speaking of shells, a more temporary kind is the focus of Week Seven (August 8 – 12) when there will be Eggzperiments galore to learn why birds lay their eggs in odd places, among other things.

Finally, it’s Farm Daze on Week Eight (August 15 –19). The kids will get to be part of the cooperative project between Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary and Ocean Song Farm learning about gardening, goats and sheep and the oysters grown on Cape Cod Bay right in front of the sanctuary.
